The town was first settled by Scots-Irish farmers who arrived in what is now Burke County during the early 1800s. They built their homes around a small creek that flowed through their farmlands. By 1827, however, most of these farmers had left for reasons such as political instability or economic difficulties in Scotland. A few remaining Scots-Irish families continued to live in Mount Airy until after World War II when they were forced out by new zoning regulations aimed at limiting development near universities
