Mt. Airy also hosts an annual rodeo that takes place at Fairgrounds Stadium on Labor Day weekend each year.

Mount Airy is a census-designated place in Pittsylvania County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mount Airy community was named after George Washington's Mount Airy as it lay between two mountain ranges in present day Pittsylvania and Ashe counties. The first settler in this area was Capt. Nathaniel Catlett who built his house on what is now Catlett Road in 1827. From that point forward, many families from this area settled down around Catlett's Creek and started farms which remain today as the largest body of water in Pittsylvania County. In 1881, the community of Mount Airy acquired some land east of its original location to make way for an expanding town during the gold rush era. This enlarged Mount Airy by 10 acres (4 hectares). The name "Mount Airy" originated with Captain Nathaniel Catlett who landed there with his small party on September 1st 1786 after trekking through difficult terrain overland from Roanoke Island to find new land for Virginia; he named his spot "Mount Aury" after General George Washington's Mt. Aury near Alexandria, VA where he had been born on December 14th 1738 just one year earlier! Captain Catlett left behind him a lasting legacy when he donated 50 acres (20 hectares) of his property to be used as a public school system farm dating back to 1872 known as Catlett Agricultural School or simply "Catlett". In 1886 when Pittsylvania County became independent from Vance County, Mount Airy became part of Pittsburghetee Township which then became part of Lexington township until 1996 when it reverted back to its original name - Mount Airy Township! Today much like Captain Nathaniel Catlett did centuries ago - many local businesses still operate off of their original acreage within the bounds of their former home town including: Humble Pie Shop & Grille (opened1974), Maple Leaf Lodge @ 516 Church Street (founded1966), Patsies Pizza Place (1978), trail's end BBQ restaurant & truck stop @ 4015 US Highway 421 South (owned and operated since 1984 by Tom Petty Band members Jeff Hostetler and John Fogerty) among others!
Mount Airy is located in North Carolina on the border of Wake County and Davidson County. It was founded in 1792 by British colonists as a trading post between the region now known as Raleigh and the southern colonies. The town grew rapidly after settlers began to arrive in increasing numbers, and by 1815 it had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1830, Mount Airy had become an important transportation center due to its location at the junction of two main wagon routes heading southward from Raleigh and northward to Yorktown. In 1836, Mount Airy became part of the new state of North Carolina when it was created from parts of Virginia and South Carolina. The town continued to grow during Reconstruction period until it declined in popularity after World War II caused by high levels of unemployment and pollution from local mills. In recent years, the town has undergone some revitalization efforts with plans for development including a new housing project, a library renovation, and a campaign to bring back old-fashioned milk punches which are still popular among residents today.
