Mount Airy is home to the Mount Airy Gun Club, which was founded in 1892. The club has been hosting airgun competitions and meetings since 1903.The club’s first competition was a race to Wellston, North Carolina, where the members shot pistols at 25 yards. After that, the club hosted annual meetings at various locations around the town. In 1911, the club moved to its current location on Sullivans Corner Road. From then until 2006, the club had an annual budget of $1,500. In 2007-2008, the Mount Airy Gun Club adopted a new constitution and bylaws that allowed for open membership with no dues required. As of 2019-2020; there are over 100 active members in Mount Airy! While most of these shooters attend monthly meetings or yearly conventions to keep up with changes within the shooting community; there are also a few select shooters who maintain their own meeting schedules (usually every 3 months). During World War II many people in North Carolina were forced into service and unable to own firearms due to rationing measures put in place by Nazi Germany. Many men from Mount Airy enlisted and served as part of USAAF forces in Europe during World War II. Some airgun enthusiasts who live out of state may be unaware this fact because they may only know about WWI veterans or those living near military installations such as Special Operations Forces positions etc... However many airguns enthusiasts are aware that people from North Carolina enlisted in WWII and some have even preserved their firearms collection as part of their research project into history!

The mill closed in 2006 but was reopened by local entrepreneurs in 2009 as an arts and crafts store known locally as "The Frame Shop". In 2000, the town gained notoriety when high school students from nearby Durham burned down an old textile mill that had been abandoned for many years due to asbestos concerns. This event helped create awareness about environmental issues within the town and led to more sustainable practices being implemented within the economy overall

In addition to being a popular tourist stop, Mount Airy also contains several interesting attractions, including a small fortification built by the Continental Army in 1777 and an observation post that used to be the tallest structure in North Carolina.
Mount Airy was founded by James Robertson in 1792. The community grew rapidly due to the area's natural resources and its proximity to Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1868, Mount Airy became a town and was renamed after Mount Airy Hill, which is located in Charlotte. In 1927, the United States Post Office moved from Asheville to Mount Airy and it changed its name again to White Sulphur Springs in honor of U.S. Vice President Al Gore.
