In 1838, Morrisville became the permanent home of North Carolina's African American institution, Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee Institute. It is also where Frederick Douglass delivered his famous speech "An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of America". By 1860, Morrisville had grown sufficiently large that it voted to secede from North Carolina and become its own state. However, due to Confederate military efforts, it remained within the Union until 1865 when it finally fell to Confederate forces. Afterward, it reverted back to its former name of Morrisville and slowly regained its economy and population until World War II when all but a few buildings were destroyed byfirebombing during the war effort. After the war, there was continued growth in Morrisville as new stores and businesses opened up downtown while traditionalenterprises such as grocery stores closed their doors or moved out because of competition from interstate Expressway Entertainments Stores which began opening up around town shortly thereafter (largely thanks to local politician Floyd Blease). In recent years however some small businesses have begun coming back into operation like a hair salon on West End Avenue near High Street which has been open since 1978 after being closed for many years due to economic difficulties; however most businesses have either reopened or are currently inactive because of lack of customers or competition from other businesses located nearby on I-95 which has made life very difficult for old timers like Mrs.[?] who keep her business going despite having no employees anymore
