By 1912, about 60% of all crop production inSurryCounty had been raised by farmers within its limits since 1885. The groves of trees that still stand today along Rte 141 near downtown MorrisVILLE were planted around 1915-1920 during World War I as part of America's "Garden Plot." In 1878, however, things changed when General Richard Ewell captured Raleigh and took control of North Carolina's government under Confederate President James Kenedy III. From then on until 1865 (when Union forces regained control),North Carolina was governed by Confederate sympathizers rather than Ulysses S Grant’s American forces which meant that all aspects of life–from education to farming–were controlled by the South (Barton 1990). This Restrictive 1861 Constitution led to economic hardship for many people living within easy reach of Richmond where food could be grown easily while people lived under military rule without any say or vote (Lansky 1993). This situation only deteriorated further after Reconstruction began which saw African Americans gain rights throughout much southern United States but not yet in North Carolina where they continued being treated as second class citizens (Haney 1998). During this time period many people left Morristown for better opportunities inland because there was little work available here outside of agriculture jobs that required overpaid labor(Fletcher 1979; Sloan 1993; Barton 1990). This migration away from Morristown helped shape Morrisville into one of the most segregated towns on Long Island during this time period(Fletcher 1979). However even though these migrants had different aspirations or goals they all arrived together with similar problems: few jobs available outside agriculture while living close together with few opportunities for advancement or socialization apart from each other(Haney 1998; Fletcher 1979) . Although some members ofmorrison experienced some excellent times such as becoming mayors or governors during post-war Reconstructionperiods many felt like their struggles would never end no matter how hard they tried(Fletcher 1979; Haney 1998)). By 1970 nearly half century latervoters still did not have full accessto voting rights due largely to socio-economic factors such as race/ethnicity withinmorrison itself along with lackof affordable housing developments within walking distanceof schools etc.(Herrera 2000) . So despite efforts made by variouscommunity organizations over recent decades attempts at revitalization continue unabated .
