When the Morrisville Rifle and Shotgun Club was organized in 1881, there were only a few handguns in the area. The club began to import rifles from England and other countries, and soon had a strong rifle arm. In 1892, the club donated land to build a rifle range on the east side of town. The first rifle match was held at this range on July 10th, 1892. The Morrisville Rifle and Shotgun Club played an important role in developing North Carolina's shotguns laws as well. They helped pass the shotgun law in 1907 which made it easier for shotguns to be imported into North Carolina. The Morrisville Rifle and Shotgun Club also contributed money towards building a state police academy in 1909-10. In 1933, the Morrisville Rifle and Shotgun Club merged with another firearm society in nearby Wilsonburg to become known as the Wilsonburg Rifle & Pistol Association (WRPA). This merger gave WRPA more power over its members' firearms purchases, exports, membership dues, marketing, financial responsibility and other aspects of their organization. WRPA continued to operate as an all-volunteer association until 1975 when it became part of the National Firearms Association (NFA).
