Morrisville is the county seat of Durham County. The first humans to live in Morrisville were Native American traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to or from other parts of the United States during the early 1800s. In 1819, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters from Charlotte to Morristown after victories in the War of 1812 against Great Britain. The following year, Morrisville became part of Durham County and began receiving mail service from Raleigh. In 1830, an elementary school was built on what is now Market Street and continued being used until it burned down in 1862. A new school was built on Enterprise Avenue in 1872 and continues to be used today as Durham High School. In 1865, Morrisville became home to Confederate forces during the Civil War when Union soldiers besieged it while attacking Confederate troops retreating from North Carolina after Battle Of Missionary Ridge. After Union forces retreated, manyof these soldiers took refuge in Morrisville and its surrounding communities until they could find safe areas outside of America. During World War II, Morrisville played an important role as an airfields for fighter planes flying over Northern Europe during World War II; however, most of these facilities have been lost since then- primarily due to damage caused by hurricanes Florence and Michael). Today, Morrisville remains a small town with a population under 6,000 people; however, its economy depends heavily on agriculture and local businesses that provide services such as grocery stores and transportation systems for residents living within walking distance of those businesses. Additionally, there are several arts organizations located within walking distance of the town center which offer art programs for children as well as adult education opportunities such as painting classes or sculpture workshops for locals interested in learning more about their cultures through creative expression.
