The name "Morrisville" comes from nearby Mount Morrission which once served as a trading post for farmers and traders travelling between Charlotte and Raleigh during the early days of American settlement in North Carolina. On December 15, 1796, General James Clinton's brigade camped at Mount Morrission on their way from Charlotte to Kinston when they were met by Colonel Nathanael Greene's force who had been sent against Clinton's retreating army at Yorktown three days earlier. After an exchange of fire which left both sides slightly injured, Clinton ordered his men to retire without further ado and set up their tents on high ground about one mile east of where present day Morrisville sits - an event immortalized by Thomas Paine in his pamphlet "A Vindication of British Policy". In 1852, it became a city and had a population of over 50,000 people. The City of Winston-Salem annexed Morrisville in 1907. The first settler in Morrisville was James Morgan who arrived with his family from England in 1792. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Yadkin River and named it "Morrisville." The first town meeting was held on December 1st, 1792 to discuss some aspects of starting a new town. James Morgan also erected a pole driven into the ground to serve as an early courthouse which still stands today near Main Street and Highway 129A. In 1800, Colonel JohnKeith's Regiment marched through Middlesboro Township (now known as Chapel Hill) on their way to join General Robert Easley's army at Camden Barracks outside Raleigh, North Carolina during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse Square where they were victorious over American forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest! After this victory, General Keith ordered all British troops out of America so that Americans could pursue them into Canada! colonel john keith's regiment forever changed Morristown when they vacated for good leaving behind their equipment including cannons! 4 years later on November 10th 1812 Colonel John Keith’s Regiment again marched through Middlesboro Township 4 miles south west from present day Chapel Hill on their way back home after driving off American Forces under Brigadier General Alexander McDowell at Bull Run Field near modern day Carytown NC! This event forever changed Morristown because now 3 generations have lived here and continue to maintain these traditions along with many others that have passed through our community since then!! The first post office in Morrisville was established in 1795. In 1821, the town became a part of Henderson County. In 1827, the county was split into two parts and Morrisville became part of Henderson County East.In 1881, the county was renamed to Durham County and Morrisville became a part of that county. The population ofmorrisville peaked at 2300 in 1915 but declined during World War I and II due to the war effort. The population slowly recovered during the postwar years until it reached its current level around 2000 in 2000.
