Morrisville is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Charlotte. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census, down from 10,611 at the 2000 census. Morrisville is known for its peach orchards and its annual Peach Festival which takes place in late May or early June. The first settler in Morrisville was James Pritchard who arrived on October 8, 1787 during the American Revolution. He and his family were among the first people to settle in what is now Morrisville Township. Pritchard named their new home "Morrisville" after his parents' birthplace in England – Morriston near Bristol. It wasn't until 1827 that other families began arriving and by 1830 there were 10 residents living here. By 1840, there were 20 settlers living here and by 1845 there were 30 farmers and three innkeepers - all of whom operated stores within walking distance of each other. The town's growth came about as a result of two things: 1) development of new transportation routes through nearby Charlotte; and 2) increased demand for goods brought overland fromncash towns such as Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill along the then newly completed road system connecting eastern North Carolina with southeastern South Carolina via Charlotte & Elizabeth City (then called Elizabeth City County). The first store opened in 1847 on Main Street just east of present day US 421 . In 1850, when!", main street crossed US 421 for the first time; it ran east from Chatham to meet RR #2 across Washington Street just north of today's courthouse lawn – one block south of where US 421 crosses I-85 today! In 1851 local contractor John Witherspoon built a stagecoach stop opposite what is now Plantation Road – this stop served as both a store and post office until 1909 when it closed due to fire damage! On December 11th 1865 Union General Jubal Early arrived at Morriston with 1,500 men en route to join General Robert E Lee's Army during Confederate victories at First Bull Run and Second Bull Run Campaigns near Petersburg Va.. That night General Early burned through muchof downtown Morrisville before bivouacking outside present day Old Town Square where he later rested his troops before marching onward southward towards Asheboro.. On January 3rd 1870 7 soldiers died while stationed within 100 yards (91 m) of Present Day Post Office Walls when an exploding mortar bomb prematurely detonated inside an ammunition depot adjacent to their position! It is believed that the mills were the first outside of Philadelphia to be built using water power. By 1875, there were six mills in Morrisville with a total capacity of 2 million pounds of flour per day. The town began developing into a commercial center with several stores and buildings being erected along streets like Tryon Street and Market Street. In 1907, Morristown-Banks County School District No. 1 merged with Banksboro-Morristown School District No. 2 to form the Banksboro-Morristown Schools District No. 1 which remains today as one of the largest school districts in North Carolina
