Morrisville is located on NC-5 and U.S. Route 421 north of Durham and east of Zebulon County. The first permanent settler in Morrisville was Andrew Ogle who arrived in 1772 from Scotland. In 1814, James Darnall set up a gristmill in what is now the heart of Morrisville; this mill became known as "Darnall's Mill" because its founder ran it until his death in 1865. The town was named for General John Bache (1755-1828), who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. congressman from North Carolina from 1821 to 1829 before moving to Kentucky where he died at age 72 years old on July 10, 1828). In 1838, local farmer James McCarty erected a cabin on the site of present day Morrill Elementary School; this log cabin remains standing today as one of Morrisville's most notable landmarks.[1] A post office called Morrill was established here on April 24, 1840,[2] and remained in operation until 1915 when it was merged into the larger Raleigh post office system[3]. The early days of Morrisville were very rough; there wasn't even a school or clinic until after 1830 when Reverend Wm Hatton built one out of wood and materials he found available near his farmstead.[4][5] Reverend Hatton also started giving classes to teach basic arithmetic to locals so they could start their own businesses around town during those difficult times[6][7]. However, by 1850 things had calmed down somewhat with just two stores open [8], but growth continued to erode rapidly due to lack of development opportunities along with competition from other towns across Randolph County[9].
