In 1853, an act was passed authorizing the erection of a schoolhouse in what is now downtown Morrisville. The first teacher to teach classes in this building was Mrs. Sallie Humphreys on December 4th of that year. Classes began on January 8th of 1854 under Rev A H Wilkinson with thirty-six students attending morning sessions and evening classes during winter months when no school operated due to harsh weather conditions! By 1865 there were four teachers employed full-time: Rev W B McNeill (January 8th 1865 – May 7th 1865), Geo M Copley (May 7th 1865 – November 26th 1865), Geo Fenton (November 26th 1865 – February 3rd 1870) and Miss G E White (February 3rd 1870). Today’s memory district courthouse located near downtown Morrisville opened its doors on July 10, 1912 as one of only two buildings remaining from old Greeneville County Courthouse which burned down on April 20 th 1915 while serving as county courthouse!

Morrisville was founded in 1792 by George Morris and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for Colonel John Morris of the State Line Militia who had moved from Virginia to North Carolina in 1779. The Morristons were pioneers in the region and set up a store on the site of present day Morrisville in 1792. In 1836, they donated land to create what is now downtown Morrisville. In 1839, the town became a county seat and has remained that way since then. The county courthouse stands today on Main Street within walking distance of many businesses and services. The population of Morrisville grew rapidly during the early 1800s; by 1800, it had reached 100 residents. By 1860, it consisted only of twenty-six families living in three shacks on Church Hill Road (now West Broad Street). However, with cotton prices increasing throughout this time period, development continued apace. By 1870, there were over 200 people living in Morrisville; by 1880, it had grown to more than 400 people! In 1881, due to financial problems caused by agricultural depression, John Sayers renamed the city of Raleigh as "Morrisville" after himself and his son-in-law Cyrus Vance Sr., Governor of North Carolina during Reconstruction. This name change did not last long though as Raleigh quickly reverted back to its original name after John Sayers' death in 1882. Nevertheless, "Morrisville" remains an official name for the city today
Morrisville was founded by English colonists in 1725. The town was named after General James Morris, who led British forces during the American Revolution. Morrisville became a manufacturing center after the discovery of coal resources in the area. After World War II, Morrisville experienced growth as a suburb of Charlotte.
