The Morganton Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892 by Colonel John S. Hinton. The club has been meeting at the old salt mine on Pigeon Forge Road since then. At first, Morganton gunsmiths made target holders from wood or metal, but soon they began to make cast iron targets that could be shot with a rifle or pistol. The first cast iron target holder was built by Captain John C. Cramer of the North Carolina Militia in 1894. Other early casts were made by Jno. Aiken & Sons of Wilmington, Nc., for use at local fairs and other events. By 1903, allcast iron target holders were being produced in large quantities by many different manufacturers throughout the state of North Carolina. In 1924, the Morganton Rifle and Pistol Club erected its own building on Pigeon Forge Road adjacent to the old salt mine where it has been meet ever since to shoot their annual Trap and Target Tournament which is one of the oldest continuing shooting contests in America conducted as part of professional Shooters Association/Rifleman’s Convention circuit including most populated western states such as Nevada (Carson City), California (Bakersfield), Oregon (Portland) and Arizona ( Tucson).

Morganton is a town in Pitt County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2000 census. Morganton is part of the Greensboro metropolitan area. Morganton has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with average monthly temperatures ranging from 18.4°F to 25.0°F. The first Europeans to visit Morganton were surveyors and traders looking for new markets for their goods during what would become the American Revolution. Dutchman Hendrick Vanghese and Britishman Richard Henderson explored the area in 1776 while on their way to capture Fayetteville, North Carolina on behalf of George Washington as part of his Continental Army campaign against Great Britain. They named the community after General John Morgan who had fought in the Battle of Saratoga and had been taken prisoner by British forces while leading Patriot forces that helped repel British troops from that battle in 1777. John's brother-in-law Nathaniel Parrish also gave land near Morganton to build a small church and schoolhouse which served as both community center and school until 1802 when it became known as "Morganton Academy" due to its then location across the street from present day's High School campus (now University Park). In 1814, when Concord College opened its doors north of Morganton, more than 600 people lived in 209 homes scattered around farmland just east of what is now intersections I-240/Upper Big Branch Road (exit 509) and Umpqua Valley Parkway/Old State Road 1211 (exit 907). Commerce was conducted through wagons drawn by teamsters over dirt roads running through farmlands; there were no rails until after 1800 when Johnston & Co., a cotton gin manufacturer based in nearby Wilmington began producing cotton bales here at their millstream channel using water power supplemented by horse power before opening a steam engine generating system about 1840 which allowed them to produce 5500 bales per day including 400 pounds high quality cloth without having to move it; By 1860 coal had replaced rice as Morgantown's principal source of income with this business providing employment for over 60% males between ages 15-65 years old; Coal production continued until 1975 when mills closed because competition from oil development made mining impractical In 1870s several churches were built: First Baptist Church1872; Second Baptist Church1879; Methodist Episcopal Church1887 (later Southern Methodist Episcopal); Presbyterian ChurchUSA 1889; African American Protestant church founded 1902 In 1900s two schools opened: Union High School 1896(later Westover Preparatory School) and Appalachian Christian School1901 In 1930s three stores: Woolworth’s 1920(later Jaxon’s Drug Store), Lowes 1921(later Good Sam’s Carryout), Sears Roebuck 1929-( extant building since 1978) A post office was established at Morgantown in 1903 but discontinued operations 1945 With decline of coal industry came decrease in population density although some remain today working off grid or using secondhand equipment such as farming implements or Forestry products According to 2010 Census data 2% black residents make up 8% percent white residents living within same ZIP code

Morganton is a small town in North Carolina, located about 20 miles north of Raleigh. It was founded in 1792 by settlers from the town of Kittrell on the Yadkin River. The first store and post office were built here in 1803. The name Morganton comes from the French word for "mountain." Morganton saw some significant growth during the late 19th century. A textile mill was built here in 1881, and then a cotton gin followed in 1886. In 1903, Morganton became the site of an annual agricultural fair that attracted many people from throughout the area to buy goods from local farmers. The mill closed in 1973, but it has remained vacant and is now used as a storage facility. Morganton also saw some development during World War II: First, military barracks were erected here; then, a airfield was constructed nearby for American bombers use during World War II. Morganton was founded in 1763 by Charles Fenton and his wife, Susannah. It became a town in 1837. The first post office was established in Morganton in 1834. The town has since grown to over 20,000 residents.
