Morganton is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morganton is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The first people to live in what is now Morganton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near what is today's downtown area. The first white settlers arrived in 1807, when Colonel James Moore and his party traveled down the Yadkin River from Virginia. They named their new settlement "Morgantown" after General John Morgan's battle against indigenous forces near Charlotte in 1805. In 1818, Tiffin Atherton purchased land east of Morganton from General Thomas Johnson for £500 sterling. Aetherton began to build a sawmill on the river and developed a small community around it with AfricanAmerican workers. By 1830, however, Atherton had sold all his property east of Morganton to Jno Sayers for £2,000 sterling; Sayers built him a home there that still remains standing today. In 1830-31 Captain John Smith built a log cabin west of Morganton on lands which he later donated to Christmastime dinner services at local churches each year until 1875 when they were moved to First Presbyterian Church downtown (now known as Bethune-Cookman University). In 1840s twoandhalf miles north of Morganton was an encampment called "Baptist Camp" which served as an observation post for Confederate troops during the Battle of Gettysburg northwest of town while Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant bombarded nearby Union positions south of town; Baptist Camp was abandoned by Confederate forces after the battle and its members retreated south into northeast North Carolina where they continued guerrilla warfare against Yankees until 1865 when most surrendered unconditionally at Appomattox Court House along with other southern resistance fighters including Jubal Early and William Tecumseh Sherman leading their army through northern Georgia towards Richmond Mountain where they finally surrendered aboard CSS “Virginia” on April 9th 1865 just days before secession officially became effective throughout much of former Confederacy
