Morganton is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,463 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morganton was founded in 1851 by Captain John Waddell and his wife Elizabeth Shortridge Waddell. The name means "place of Meeting." Captain Waddell's father had been born here in 1792 and died here in 1837. In 1861, Colonel Gouverneur Morris set up a military post known as Fort Morgan here to suppress slave rebellions in the area. The town became MORGANTON on November 3, 1861. In 1886, Morganton residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name of Greensboro. On July 15, 1912, Morganton voters passed an ordinance establishing an electric light company with three poles and sixty Watts of power for use within the city limits; this company was known as Charlotte Electric Light Company #1). The first store opened in downtown Morganton on December 8, 1907 by J L White & Sons hardware storekeepers Chester Burch and George Browning Jr.. The first school opening took place on April 7th (the same day that Rockingham High School opened) in a building which still stands today just outside of town limits - it was called South Park School until 1909 when it moved into its present location across from Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church). That same year also saw the opening of Macedonia General Store across from White’s Hardware where Mrs Glover started selling groceries out front starting at $1 per week! Bethlehem Baptist Church built their present church building around 1915 which still stands today inside the gates! The electrical lights were turned off for good on October 6th 1951 during World War II because there wasn't enough money saved up to replace them with new technology so they could remain functional! However some have erroneously believed that this happened at night only due to lack of documentation! Morgantown has always been one big family business - no matter what went on outside our door! After American independence was gained, Morganton reverted to its original status as an independent township until 1892 when it became part of Cabarrus County. The town has had several notable residents including Vice President Ulysses S. Grant and General James Longstreet who fought for Confederate forces during the Civil War.Today, Morganton remains a small town with a strong agricultural tradition that includes raising chickens and pigs, growing crops such as corn and soybeans, and manufacturing products such as artificial intelligence software and cigarettes
