Morganton is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. Morganton was founded in 1851 by German immigrants and was named for General John Morgan who fought in the American Revolution and died fighting for America. Morganton's first post office opened in 1857. The community developed around a Lutheran church and school which remain operational to this day. In 1916, Morganton became one of the first towns to be integrated into the modern United States when it joined Wake County. The tornado that struck Morganton on October 14, EF4 killed four people and injured many more; it is still considered one of the worst natural disasters in North Carolina history. It took over two hours for firefighters to reach all of Morganton; even then there were difficulties getting water to help fight the fire because of high hills near the town limits. On Saturday October 15th 1945 residents returned to their homes after five days without access to power or food after an extensive destruction caused by Hurricane Floyd including parts of Eugenia (the town next door) which had been leveled by damage from Hurricane Isabel just three weeks earlier

Morganton is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morganton was founded in 1814 as a small community on the Yadkin River by Scots-Irish settlers who had come to work on the new state line between North Carolina and Virginia. The name derived from an initial grant of land to James Hargrave Morgantown by King George III of Great Britain in 1786. In 1814, when Morganton was incorporated as a town, it lay within what is now Rutherford County and its boundaries extended only to what are now parts of Wake County and Durham County. The first courthouse in Morganton was built in 1827 and served until1876 when a new courthouse was built on State Street east of downtown. The old courthouse still stands today and is used as a municipal building. The town's first schoolhouse was built in 1834; it burned down in 1857 but was rebuilt and named after Bishop John Rankin (1792-1864). In 1840, two men - Andrew Dixon and John Fenton - came to Morganton from Scotland with the intention of starting a cotton plantation there. They failed because of lack of capital and returned home before their project could be completed. However, Dixon's son, Alexander Dixon (1810-72), started another cotton plantation near present-day Carytown just west of Morganton before he too died young at age 30 due to yellow fever contracted while working on that plantation. The townsite at present day known as Morganton developed around this original cotton plantation complex which included several large mansions along State Road 280W which ran through downtown Morganton until it became Marlboro Street following creation of Chapel Hill Memorial Park (now University Drive) adjacent to Interstate 85 approximately 1 mile south eastward along that road from where State Road 280E crossed into Durham County parallel with Duke University campus northeastward whence I-85 leads southwestward via US 11 thitherto becoming Chapel Hill Boulevard thence becoming Chapel Hill Memorial Parkway finally leaving Downtown Morganton behind joining rural Rutherford County Again!! This has always been my favorite tale ever told about our great city called "Morganto"
Morganton is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,734 at the 2010 census. Morganton was founded in 1748 by Captain John Marshall and his wife as a trading post on the Eastern Shore of North Carolina. It became an incorporated town in 1857. The original Forney Mill (now a museum) was built in 1854 by Wm. Fenton and still stands east of Morganton's downtown area. The community changed its name to Morganton after General Averell Harriman visited it on July 10, 1899; he had been traveling through the region and stopped at Forney Mill before continuing on to Raleigh for a meeting with fellow American commissioners that summer. In 1921, Morganton began serving as the site of the Federal Reserve Bank of Charlotteville which remains headquartered there today. In 1988, amendments were made to North Carolina's Constitution which designated Morganton as one of eight towns within one hundred thirty-eight miles of the state capital Durham which would have voting representation in the state Legislature regardless of population size.
