Morganton is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in Morganton was John Tryon in 1785. Tryon named his new land "Morganton" after Mount Moriah in First Chronicles 21:8-9. In 1836, General James Longstreet and his army passed through the town on their way to invade Georgia, and stopping at Morganton for dinner, Longstreet called the town "a very nice place." In 1892, Morganton voters adopted a municipal charter which provided for a mayor and seven council members with responsibility for things such as fire protection, public works and street maintenance. The current mayor is Rick Crawford. Morganton was established as an unincorporated community on February 14, 1892 by two men from Randolph who had come to Morgan County looking for land to purchase from Jno Crampton (the original owner). When they found no land available they asked local resident George Overstreet if he would sell them some of his property that had been used as a barn by him and his family since before Indian Removal. Overstreet agreed to sell them 3 acres (1 km²) of what is now Morganton Center Drive but declined to sell any more because he did not want any other people living near him without good deed reciprocity. The first school in Morganton was built on what is now Woodruff Road in 1895 under the name of Southside School District No 2. In 1915 the district changed its name to Morgantown Elementary School District No 5 when it merged with neighbouring districts Southside Elementary School District No 4 and Westside Elementary School District No 3. The present day school building dates back to 1924 when it replaced an earlier wooden structure which had been destroyed by fire; this building still stands today close to downtown Morgantown along Woodruff Road between High Street and Chapel Street. For many years there have been efforts made by locals/initiatives including grants received from various foundations throughout North Carolinaeto upgrade or rebuild both buildings but no progress has been made despite numerous proposals over time- until recently!
