The community was originally called Horseshoe Bend because of its location on the bend in the Catawba River. In 1836, Morganton became part of Granville County and changed its name to Morganton after General John Buford who had helped drive Native Americans out of South Carolina during the antebellum period. In 1898, A&M University moved from Sewanee to Morganton and renamed it "A&M". In 1919, Granville County merged with Vance County to form Jackson Counties, which included Morganton. In 1933, Anson Air Force Base moved from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to nearby Beech Grove Township and changed the name of Beech Grove Airport to Anson Air Force Base Airport. In 1990, Beech Grove Township changed its name back to Morganton after being recommended by then- Mayor Cushman Ferguson for consideration for an award given by North Carolina Governor James Hunt III for excellence insmall towns within North Carolina

Morganton is a town in Fayette County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,514 at the 2010 census. Morganton is the county seat of Fayette County. Morganton was founded in 1819 as a small community on the east side of the Santee River by Captain John Morgan and his men during the American Revolution. In 1854, it became part of Gaston Parish when that parish was created from portions of Fayette and Johnston Counties. Morganton was laid out in 1819 by Captain JohnMorgan with help from James Watt and other early settlers. It originally consisted of only a few log homes, but over time it grew into a large town with more than 100 businesses. The original downtown area still retains many historic buildings including the courthouse, jail, barracks/temporary post office, schoolhouse and several churches. The town experienced some significant growth during World War II; its population increased from 350 to over 6,000 soldiers and civilians who helped support military activities throughout Europe and Asia. However, following the war's end Morganton began to decline as businesses closed down and residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. In 1984, however, local officials announced plans to rejuvenate the downtown area with new shopping malls and restaurants as well as expansion of traditional local businesses such as grocery stores and convenience stores. This plan went forward despite resistance from some residents who felt that their neighborhoods had not been targeted enough for development purposes; nonetheless, overall Morganton saw modest growth during this era thanks in part to concerted city-wide efforts instead of individual initiative. In recent years Morganton has seen an increase in concentrations around its two largest streets: Main Street (which runs north-south) and Rutherford Avenue (which skirts both sides of town). These areas have become known as "the business district" due to their concentration of high-traffic commercial establishments including banks, law firms and healthcare clinics - all among the most important economic nodes within Morgantown itself. These clusters have led to complaints from some residents about what they see as growing commercialization outside their municipal boundaries - although overall there has been no major impact on resident life or quality of life hitherto
Morganton was founded in 1785 by Captain Johann Gottfried Wilhelm Von Krieger, a German army officer. The town was named for von Krieger's wife, Margarete Morgenson. In 1814, the town became part of Cleveland County, North Carolina, and in 1845 it became a part of Person County.
