In 1875, Morganton became an independent city when it seceded from Randolph County to become its own separate municipality under the leadership of Mayor George Aiken. The city has experienced many waves of growth over the years with annexations from other municipalities including High Point (1970), Salisbury (1990), Cary (2002), and Chapel Hill (2012). In 2016, Morganton annexed neighboring Burlington City due to annexation concerns about high levels of poverty within Burlington City's borders and lack of affordable housing options within Morganto

Morganton is a small town in the United States located in Robeson County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1824 by Colonel John Rankin and his family. The population of Morganton was 1,719 at the 2010 census. Morganton is one of only two towns in Robeson County that are still extant as of the 2010 census. The other town is Mount Pleasant. Morganton was founded on a large tract of land granted to Colonel John Rankin by King George II of Great Britain in 1824. TheRankin family had been living in North Carolina for several years and were among the earliest settlers there. They named their new settlement after their father-in-law, General James Grant, who had served as governor of North Carolina from 1813 to 1818 and had helped conquer much of South Carolina during that time. Morganton quickly became a thriving community with its own school and post office. In 1830, it also gainedindependence from Robeson County, becoming its own municipality under the name Morgantown. That same year saw another important event occurred within Morgantown when Judge Augustus Broughton died suddenly and left behind an estate which included dozens of slaves numbering more than 100 individuals - many of whom were owned by local textile companies at the time! This led to increased political unrest in Morganton as various factions fought over control over what would become known as "Broughton's Negroes." Despite these challenges, however, Morrison continued to thrive through the critical early 19th century period when much American commerce passed through its borders; including droves of cotton arriving via boat from British colonies downriver (and then onward through Baltimore). This business activity fostered growth within Morrison even as white residents increasingly lost interest or distance themselves from what they saw as black community developing around them quoitryly without their consent or assistance – often resulting in violence and disorder on occasion.
