Morganton is a town in Caldwell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Cleveland Combined Statistical Area. Morganton was platted in 1852 by Captain John Broughton and his wife Anna Mae Stephenson as a farmstead on the east bank of the Catawba River. In 1875, the name was changed to Morganton after General A. P. Morgan's home town in Virginia. The first post office was established in Morganton on April 12, 1875, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1937. The town started as a small farming community with only a few buildings and no permanent residents when railroad construction began in 1887 nearby Celina ended up enlarging much of Caldwell County so that Morganton became an important passenger stop for trains running between Raleigh and Durham along what would become known as the "Plymouth Line". By 1907 there were over 100 businesses including several banks located in downtown Morganton with over 300 residents employed in various industries including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation (the first bus service arrived here), banking/commerce/real estate etc., making it one of the most prosperous communities east of Richmond Virginia at that time. When World War II began military preparations large numbers of soldiers and their families moved into Morganton from other parts of Caldwell County and more than 1000 housing units were built here during 1945-1946 alone making it one of North Carolina's largest wartime refugee resettlement efforts ever with many veterans permanently settling here through marriage or adoption after their discharge from war service or leave from their employer’s hands). Some gun slings are very simple and others are much more complicated. One type of gun sling is called a “bucket” or “gourd” sling. These pieces of equipment were typically used to carry firearms in a protective manner, as they could be difficult to grip without taking away from the wielder’s hand-eye coordination. A typical bucket sling consisted of two metal plates that were connected by a strap. The plate was placed over the butt of the firearm and then one or both arms were stretched out behind it so that it hung down below the weapon (Figure 1). This type of sling was not only effective at protecting against theft but also allowed for quick release if needed. Another type of gun sling is called an “overhand” or “bunny ear” sling. This type is often used when firing handguns as it allows for a much easier grip on the firearm than with a bucket or gourd sling (Figure 2). The key difference between an overhand and bunny ear hangar is that with an overhand hanger, one arm is free to swing around while holding onto another arm with what would otherwise be an awkward grip (Figure 3). Overhand gunslings can also be used in close quarters combat situations as they allow for better aim because they provide better stability compared to other types of gunslungs ( Figure 4 ).

Morganton is one of two towns in Alamance County that were founded by white settlers and remain established as communities today; the other is Cabarrusville. The first resident of Morganton was James Johnston, who arrived in 1796. In 1827, John Rankin purchased land from the Cherokee Nation and built a cabin there. Rankin served as mayor of Morganton from 1830 to 1835 and captain of militia during the American Civil War. The community was founded on May 10, 1800 by white settlers named John and Mary Clements with donations from Sir Walter Raleigh II and others. At first only male citizens could own property in Morganton because women were not allowed to own land or vote until after they had children born to them. White men could build homes but no stores or businesses were allowed until after 1828 when a store building was erected by Ebenezer Cooks for $600 cash In 1829, George Washington Hardee donated land to the town for economic development purposes which included mills and stores that would be operated by white men only Morganton became an official municipality on July 1st, 1865 thanks to passage of the Morgantown Law by Governor Tryon Vance Morganton's economy has been largely based on agriculture since its founding The town experienced rapid growth following World War II with many new residents moving into the area due to increased industrial production in nearby Durham Today Morganton serves as a bedroom community for Durham while still retaining some degree of local autonomy
