Morganton is known for its peach orchards and apple orchards. Morganton was founded in 1793 by Captain John Smith and his family as a landing on Hatteras Island for settlers coming from Virginia. In 1811, Colonel James McDowell established a military post here to protect trade with Spanish Cuba and the Bahamas during the War of 1812. In 1861, General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate army advanced through Onslow County, capturing many people and animals along the way before moving on to Hendersonville in central North Carolina. After the war ended, Morganton became one of Reconstruction South Carolina's most prosperous towns until white flight began after the end of World War II – making Morganton one of America's "inner city" communities. The Peach Orchard Road Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The district includes 140 contributing buildings including 20 schools and 10 churches dating back to 1793-1900; nine farmsteads (four with original plows); four other residences; two sawmill mills; one store; two gristmills; three blacksmiths' shops; six barns/almshouses; five miles (8 km) of roads totaling over 100 acres (40 hectares) ; seven peach orchards with approximately 2,500 trees yielding about 50 million peaches per year
