The first school building was built on what is now Main Street in Morganton in 1819-20 by Methodists under the direction of Reverend Drury Cranch and Revivals Mr. White and Mr. Beasley respectively. The community experienced economic decline starting with World War II when steel production increased in nearby Raleigh but has since bounced back thanks to its location within commuting distance for jobs in Raleigh and elsewhere outside of Morganton proper including an unsuccessful effort to establish itself as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil (the town has more than 2 acres (1 km2) of farmland)). By 1827, Morganton had become a small farming community with 5 storehouses and 100 residents. In 1875, an act of the General Assembly designated Morganton as the county seat for Gaston County. In 1907, after years of discussion between local officials and developers, Morganton became home to the first municipal water system in Gaston County when it was built across from present-day Camp Hill. The municipally owned system provided drinking water for townspeople and other rural areas until 1978 when it was sold to UNC Charlotte. Morganton has experienced many changes throughout its history including being renamed from Atwater Station to Morgantown in 1898; becoming one of several towns in Gaston County annexed by Charlotte during Reconstruction; experiencing growth due to timber exports during World War II; declining agricultural production following Repeal of Prohibition; experiencing rapid growth following Hurricane Floyd which caused extensive damage in 1999; gentrification beginning around 2006 which led to increased crime rates; and most recently experiencing significant growth due to global economic development which has led to more people moving into the area. Today, Morganton is an important commercial center with businesses located throughout downtown including a large Walmart Supercenter, two restaurants/cafés (A&W Garden & BBQ Pit), fourGas stations (including one within walking distance of downtown), two health clinics (one inside City Hall), three schools (four grades K-12), and a Baptist church which services both locals and visitors alike. It is also home to numerous residential neighborhoods including Parkwood BoulevardSouthwest Mixed Use Development adjacent to Interstate 495/Upper Big Branch Road Northeast near Cedar Rapids Regional Airport north of downtown and much older neighborhoods such as Beech Grove Southeast along US Highway 421 east of downtown
Morganton was founded in 1754 by Colonel John Morganton and his wife, Susannah. The town served as a post office from 1754 to 1868. In 1814, the United States Congress passed the Morganton Resolution protesting slave trade on the African coast. The resolution called for compensation to be given slaves who had been transported to America. The town developed into an agricultural community and experienced rapid growth after World War I. By 1970, Morganton had a population of over 10,000 people.
