Morganton is a town located in Roanoke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Morganton is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and many other educational institutions. The community was founded in 1836 by Reverend John Fenton and his wife Sarah. The original log cabin used as Morganton's courthouse still stands today. It served as a courthouse until 1907 when it burned down. In 1865, General James Longstreet's brigade arrived in Morganton to help Confederate Forces fight against Union troops under Brigadier General David Hunter. On July 10th, 1865, General Longstreet's brigade came into Morganton while on their way to reinforce General Beauregard's forces at Morehead City. There were several small skirmishes that day before nightfall), leading to the Battle of Perryville which ended with Union victory and the capture of Major General James Longstreet and thousands of soldiers including Colonel Robert Ewell (the namesake of Ewell Air Force Base). After this battle, most white residents fled to safety while black citizens remained behind to fight for the Confederacy. In 1940, Mrs. Alfred Sappington donated land near downtown Morganton for use as a shopping center; it became known as Sappington Plaza after her death in 1949. In 1984-1985, construction began on what is now known as "The Great Mall". This mixed-use project included an indoor/ Outdoor mall with over 150 stores/, restaurants*, cafes* and hotels*. The mall opened on November 2nd 1985 and contained more than $350 million worth of merchandise from 35 countries*.
