Morganton was founded in 1781 by General James Robertson as a post on the Yadkin River for his troops stationed there during the American Revolution. In 1810, it became a town and was named after Major General Edmund Randolph Morganton who fought with Johnston at Kings Mountain and then led an attack on Fort Fisher in 1814. The town's first store opened in 1830. In 1839, due to its location on the border of two military commands - Johnston’s Army of Northern Virginia and Union General Beaufort’s Army of South Carolina - Morganton became one of six Towns known as “The Six Backs” because each could lay claim to all or part of both sides of Broad Creek (now called Sampson Avenue). In 1865, when Reconstruction began in America following the Civil War, Morganton seceded from North Carolina and voted to become an independent state forming the Confederate States of America under Confederate President Jefferson Davis. After the war ended in 1865, Morganton rejoined North Carolina and re-established itself as a small town again until well into this century when it experienced significant growth thanks to its proximity to Raleigh-Durham. Today, Morganton continues to be a vibrant community with commendable economic stability thanks to its access to quality education and other amenities enjoyed by most towns throughout North Carolina. The original courthouse and jail were located on High Street in downtown Morganton before being moved to what is now Guthrie Avenue in 1949 due to fire concerns about remaining building materials inside an open-air structure for years on end.
