Morganton, North Carolina is a small town located in the Cherokee County of western North Carolina. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. Morganton is incorporated as a city. Morganton is one of two towns in Cherokee County and is also home to the University of North Carolina at Morganton. The first settlers to this area were white Methodist missionaries who came from Scotland in 1838. They founded what became known as Presbyterianism here, and soon after began their religious services in a log cabin on the edge of town square. A stone church was erected beginning in 1840, but it burned down in 1845 while the town was being built around it. A new brick building was completed in 1847 and served as both the parish center and schoolhouse until 1903 when an addition to the university campus moved into that building and that structure became known as UNC-Morganton Hall. In 1886, local dentist Driggs Crawford donated land for what would become Morganton Library which now occupies much of downtown Morganton. In 1902, Morgantowns post office opened with mail service coming through Chapel Hill before becoming an express mail service later that year. The fiber optic network providing internet access today to most residents became available here when Fiber Optic Communications Corporation (FOC) brought over its lines from Raleigh/Durham during 1996-1998 bringing much needed economic development to this otherwise rural community by creating new businesses, developing land uses including housing developments and more recently restaurants and retail stores along with annexed areas irrigated by FOC’s Corporate Park which includes research laboratories operated by UNC-Morgantons School of Medicine A major event on July 4th history occurs every few years where locals gather together for patriotic parade through town followed by fireworks display over night
