In 1916, Bellenger merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). WRA remains one of America's most prominent ammunition manufacturers today. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2%, is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,820 people, 514 households, and 438 families residing in the town. The population density was 223 people per square mile (93/km²). There were 602 housing units at an average density of 97 per square mile (39/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. There were 514 households out of which 38% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25% were non-families. 20% of all households were made up of individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The townsite of Morganton straddles two counties - Gastonia County to the east and Randolph County to the west - making it one of only a few communities in North Carolina that are both rural and urban at the same time (the others being Concord and Rocky Mount). The combination of thisurban/rural split has resulted in some unique aspects of Morgantons history: first among them, it's one of only two places in North Carolina where African Americans have been permanently resident since before Reconstruction; second, its small size means that many events throughout northcentral NC's evolving political landscape have taken place here – from local football playoffs to statehood talks – all without ever involving larger entities such as Raleigh or Chapel Hill; finally, given its proximity to Charlotte and southernaleigh county (and especially Cary), there has been plenty of opportunity for business development along with cultural experiences across racial lines. Morganton was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a farming community on the western border of what is now Gaston County. After several years of growth and development, Morganton became an incorporated municipality in 1851. In 1970, after being mineralized for oil and gas exploration, Morganton began to experience rapid growth due to its location near two major natural resources. The town's population reached 9,000 by 1990 and 15,000 by 2000. As per the 2010 census estimate, Morganton has reached its current size of 17,088 residents. The first post office in Morganton was established on November 5th, 1836. A new post office was built on the site of present day First Methodist Church in 1855; it continued operation until 1907 when it moved to Greensboro due to floods caused by Hurricane Katrina. In 1870s and 1880s there were small businesses that operated along with blacksmiths repair shops etc., all within reasonable walking distance from homes or churches (the 1st Baptist Church being located just east of today's intersection of US 421/NC 421). Today only 2 buildings remain standing from this era: old blacksmith shop #1 which still stands across from High School (now known as Appalachian Valley Christian School) and old grocery store building which once stood across from local railroad station before it burned down in the early 1900s (it sat abandoned for many years until it was purchased by developers who converted it into a home). In 1920 construction started on "The Great State Fair", one of country's most famous fairgrounds remembered for its various exhibitions including horse racing headlined by America's first champion jockey trainer Tom Poynter while also featuring food exhibits like an elephant tush stand and pig exhibit; carnival games such as nickelodeons; concerts throughout summertime featuring popular music actshell owners would put on shows nightly inside their venues while visitors could purchase tickets at gate; over $2 million worth of products were sold during fair week! Celebrities such as Art Carney,, Bing Crosby,, Lou Gehrigetc., walked the midway each day while thousands more people came to visit via open-air railway cars that took them around town stopping at various businesses along the way!
