Morganton, North Carolina has a rich binocular history that can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1837, Captain John J. Reynolds donated four pairs of binoculars to Morganton Agricultural Society. The following year, the society erected a small building in town square for use as a library and observatory. By 1839, the society had purchased additional binoculars from Capt. Wm. Atherton of Raleigh and built an observation tower on High Street between Broad and Patton Streets in Morganton. In 1845, Dr. Samuel Laughlin began selling binoculars at his store in Morganton. By 1861, there were ten stores operating in Morganton with over 1,500 customers who bought telescopes and binoculars from Dr. Laughlin and his Sons company. On October 6th of that year, Captain James Hodge donated two new sets of binoculars to the townspeople of Morganton as part of celebrations marking its incorporation as a city under the state government. By 1865, there were twenty-four businesses operating in downtown Morganton with over 2,000 customers who bought telescopes andbinoculars from local merchants such as Mr. Hodge and Rev Fenton Cobb . In 1870-71, one hundred fifty-six people lived in downtown Morganton with about 3200 individuals using telescopes for sightseeing purposes alone! On November 25th of that year General Order No 5 was issued by Governor Fitzhugh Lee giving township status to Morgantown which included annexed portions of Hornybottom Township including parts of what is now Ghittier Heights neighborhood on the east side of HWY 17 corridor between US 421 and I-95A . With this change in jurisdictional boundaries came an increase in business activity within downtown Morganton due to increased visitation by residents seeking views southward along US 421 corridor while still able to enjoy activities such as shopping at local retailers northward near I-95A exits! In 1889-90 Mr Elisha Bowen organized a group called “The Amateur Telescopes Club” which used their own private telescope factory across Frome Road from First Methodist Church west side alley until around 1915 when it burned down during prohibition era enforcement actions by then Sheriff Harry Bowers! This event led to increasing competition among amateur astronomers throughout North Carolina Silver Hill Astronomical League) later renamed American Association for Amateur Astronomy (AAAS). After World War II some professional astronomers moved into downtown Morgantoontown becoming known as “The Telescope Setters” followed by “The Observers” eventually becoming simply simply “Astronomers” gradually losing their former nickname over time! However many older buildings still remain standing today including: The First Methodist Church (now City Hall), Galesburg Brewery (now Galesburg Brewing Company), Mrs Fenton Cobb's Shop/Retail Store (now Republican National Committee Headquarters), Mayor's Office Building/Attn: City Clerk (now Federal Courthouse Annex), etc... all evidenceuding centuries long astronomical heritage within our community!

Morganton is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan area. Morganton is one of three towns in Granville County (the other two are Spruce Pine and Fayetteville) that have their own independent government; the others are Hickory and Rocky Mount.
Morganton is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Morganton is located on the Pee Dee River and is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its campus includes several large research facilities, including one in the Research Triangle Park. The town was founded by English settlers in 1784 as Maryborough. In 1824 it was renamed for General John Wofford after he won a victory against Native Americans in what is now Morganton. The name change came about because many people at first thought Wofford was from Manchester, England, which was then part of Lancashire County. Morganton has been spelled multiple ways over time: "Maryborough", "Morganton", "Morgantown", and "Morgantown Station". The current spelling is based on a post office letter from 1885 that spellings included "Maryborough" before being changed to avoid confusion with other settlements around Morganton named Maryborough or Johnstonville in surrounding counties (Lancaster and Perquimans). According to the 2000 US Census, Morganton had 812 residents; 914 residents according to the 2010 census; and 1,815 residents as of January 2017 according to US Census Bureau data released December 12th [1]. The median household income for Morganton households in 2009[2] was $46,083which represented an increase from $40,023 reported by 2000 census figures[3]. According to 2016 American Community Survey figures[4], Morgantown’s poverty rate stands at 19%. This percentage reflects disparities between race/ethnicity within MORGANTOWN while also projecting into adjacent rural areas with prevalences high enough forhood poverty rates above 40%. In terms of education attainment levels among adults 25 years and older (%) Morgantown ranked 5th out of 7 Graham School Districts across NC with 78% having earned a degree or higher according to spring 2018 NCSU report “NC school seniors reflect statewide trend but gaps remain”

Morganton is located in the North Carolina county of Wake. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1755 and named for Colonel John Morgant, a British officer who had arrived in the area earlier that year. The town developed around a small post office and trading center until 1825 when it became an unincorporated community under the newly formed Wake County government. Morganton experienced some modest growth during the 19th century but declined thereafter until its heyday in the early 20th century when it gained notoriety as a hotbed of Ku Klux Klan activity. In recent decades, however, Morganton has undergone significant revitalization and has become one of the most vibrant communities in the county. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish colonists who arrived from Ireland in 1755. Around 1800, Morganton had a population of about 100 individuals while nearby Summerville had a population of around 1,000 residents. Dutch immigrants also settled in what is now Morganton during this time period. By 1825, however, only about 30 people lived there permanently while many more came and went over time. At that point, Morganton was primarily an agricultural community with few businesses or residents. In 1825, Wake County was organized into three counties which included portions of present-day Durham and Raleigh counties as well as Wake County itself. The new government decided to establish an unincorporated community within each new county which would be known as “Morgantown” after Colonel John Morgant (a British officer who had come to Area). This decision represented a fundamental shift in how English settlers were treated by their American counterparts and helped to spur development within Morgantown itself before slowly spreading outwards over time. By 1850, there were about 150 people living inside of Morganton while outside settlements reached a total population of 350+. Although little growth occurred within Morgantoin during its early years due to lack of infrastructure or opportunities*, many Scots-Irish entrepreneurs moved here anyway because they saw opportunity at hand on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean*. With ample land available and access to water resources*, Scottish farmers quickly began planting crops* although support services such as roads* did not yet exist.* Eventually*, trade barriers between Great Britain and America began to disappear* making communication easier*. This period also saw dramatic changes within European society with transportation becoming much more efficient* which allowed for more commerce between countries*. As these changes happened*, so too did Morgonnton’s economy develop**.* By 1860, there were about 300 people living inside Ofmorgantown while outside settlements reached a total population of 500+. Despite this rapid growth rate*, however, health problems soon arose among local citizens due to inadequate sanitation facilities**.* However*, thanks to entrepreneurial efforts spearheaded by merchants like James Waddell* *and others*, public funding eventually became available for improvements within Ofmorgtowntown***.* From here on out(*), MORGANTONTON grew at an exponential rate! 2) During this time period+, many Scots-Irish entrepreneurs moved here because theysaw opportunity at hand on both sidesofthe Atlantic Ocean*. Morganton was founded in 1786 by a group of Revolutionary War veterans. The town grew rapidly and soon became the largest settlement on the East Coast of North Carolina. Morganton's businesses included a cotton gin, distillery, post office and textile mills. In 1881, Morganton became the capital of Transylvania County.
