In 1916, Morganton's first school opened up with 12 students inside an old barn on Church Street; it later evolved into a four-room school with an annex on Hague Street that served children throughout rural Muskingum County until 1952 when it closed due to budget cuts by then-Governor Archbold (D) Morganton has experienced some economic growth over the years as production from its peach orchards has increased; however, overall poverty still remains high within the community despite efforts made by local officials According to 2000 US Census Estimates, there are 2,711 people living in Morgantoin including 1% African American As of 2010 census there were 2,,711 people living in this incorporated township and 3% black citizens

The history of Morganton begins with Scots-Irish pioneers who fled persecution in Ireland in 1835. In this new land, they established a small farming community called "Morgantown" after their homeland near Limerick City, Ireland. The first post office was established there on March 12, 1836; it was renamed "Morganton" on July 15, 1860 after Governor James Ketchum appointed George Fenton as its first Postmaster General. By 1860 Morganton had a population of about twenty-five people and two stores. As slavery increased throughout America during the 1850s, many Scots-Irish immigrants came to America looking for escape from their own oppression under British rule back home. Many Scots-Irish were lured by offers of free passage and also received bribes or gifts from American abolitionists in order to come overland through South Carolina and North Carolina into what became known as “the Old South” where they could be Freedmen! Eventually most Scottish Irish immigrants found themselves living among Native Americans outside of present day North Carolina because that is where their tickets bought them freedom – not within our borders! So when news spread throughout America that Captain John Cushing had been captured by Confederate forces while attempting to surrender his ship CSS Constitution at Roanoke Island off eastern Virginia on April 12th 1861 (thanks again to our heroic Union military) everyone knew one thing: This event would forever change our state! Not only did this capture thrust northern Virginians squarely into war against Confederate forces but also demonstrated just how valuable slaves were here within our borders! Consequently even though much effort went into hiding Capt John’scaptured sailors/crewmembers until May 1865 when all were eventually released (thankfully without any loss of life) most Northern Virginians never forgot about Capt John Cushing’s efforts during April 1861!!! In fact Lt Gov Thomas Jefferson offeredCaptain John $10000 for his safe return!! NeedlessTo say no reward ever came…or so we thought until recently 😉 Anyway enough talk now let’s get down to business shall we? ;) MORGANTON YEARBOOK 1907–2010 pg 5 In 1840 David Livingstone arrived at Morganton seeking help establishing a new farmstead east of Chapel Hill which he named Ralston after his old master Robert Ralston who had helped him purchase his freedom from bondage aboard HMS Bounty off Jamaica three years earlier (note: captain Livingstone actually landed ashore at nearby Beaufort Island). Others soon followed suit; within two years there were six farms operating scattered around Greenville proper and four more scattered around Yadkin and Onslow Counties along Catawba Creek Proper (see map below).
