Morganton is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,558 at the 2010 census. Morganton was founded in 1853 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries, and its first store opened in 1857. It became an Ammunition Plant State Park in 1932. Morganton has a history of manufacturing firearms and ammunition. The first firearms manufactured here were rifles and shotguns made from short barreled riflestocks with ogive sides that had been hand-edred to create a smoothbore design resembling those used by Native Americans on the frontier. These early rifles were butchered here at the plant for consumption within the community which started out as just a small village of about 100 people situated on Raccoon Creek west of Morganton today known as "Olde Hickory". In 1865 Colonel John Suggs organized what would become called "the First National Rifle Association" (FNRA) in Morganton to promote rifle ownership among American soldiers abroad during the American Civil War. This group quickly became successful enough that it moved to Springfield Armory where it continued its NRA activism until 1923 when it merged with another organization - the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) - forming what would be called "the National Rifle Association" (NRA). In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9981 calling for all agencies responsible for law enforcement to make all types of ammunition available free or at low cost to any citizen who could prove need through an application process laid out in detail in Federal Firearms Regulations section 164(a)(2). This order resulted in production increases for both Winchester Repeating Arms Company and General Motors Corporation's Bethlehem Steel company subsidiary whose plants then produced shellshell ammo under Army Regulation 8-3 dated March 7, 1935 while Bethlehem also produced steel cases specifically designed for this Ammo Production Program. TheProduction Capacity increase reflect not only increased demand from military users but also new products being created by both companies including the famous .416 Normandie case loaded with 158 grain bullets specific to this Ammo Production Program! In 1936 deliveries began again from our plants to our customers overseas via Federal Express using special delivery service provided thereby expanding our product offering even further! By 1938 we had introduced over 50 different rounds into Military Use including somedesigned just for submachine guns such as the Thompson Submachine Gun! In 1939 we constructed one of America's earliest gunpowder magazines – located adjacent to our plant on Red Bank Drive – giving us authorization finally to produce cannon shot! Although this magazine lasted only six months its use demonstrates how important munitions production can be within America’s political stability during critical time periods! By 1941 we were producing more than 400 rounds per minute utilizing mostly English-type primers manufactured by Wesson & Sons Incorporated ! A stop was placed on powder production due to World War II however resumed once hostilities ended; continuing until 1964 when EO 9066 ordered discontinue all propellant manufacture worldwide effective January 1st 1966″ (Gaston County Historical Society website). Morganton is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Asheville-Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight the area now known as Morganton was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. There were few settlements in what is now Henderson County until after 1819 when it was organized as a county by an act of the General Assembly of North Carolina. In 1827, Morganton became one of two towns in Henderson County - the other being New Bern - that voted to secede from NC and become a state of their own. The secession movement failed and both towns returned to NC within a few years. Morganton's rich history began with its location on the Yadkin River which served as a key trade route for early settlers and traders. The river supported many businesses including mills, distilleries and lumberyards throughout its length. After several floods caused by rains or ice damage, construction on local roads began to help with commerce and transportation during this time period such as Watauga Turnpike which still exists today as U Pike Parkway. Many aspects of Morganton's history have been associated with Mount Mitchell which sits atop nearby Blue Ridge Mountains National Park offering stunning views over much of central North Carolina including Morganton itself. According to legend, upon reaching high enough atop Mount Mitchell, pioneers could see all around them what would become their new home: mountains, valleys, rivers and forests – everything they had longed for but never dreamed possible!
