Morganton is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,993 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Area. It is the largest city in Wake County and the county seat of Wake County. The name "Morganton" derives from a Cherokee word meaning "place where corn grows." The first settler in Morganton was John Day who built a cabin on what is now State Route 421 in 1811. The town's location made it convenient for shipping goods to markets in Raleigh and other nearby cities and towns. In 1868, two brothers named Nathan and John Cook set up shop as a general store and post office at what is now Main Street and Jubilee Avenue. They continued to operate their business until 1939 when they sold it to JB Searles Company which became Searles Corporation after World War II. In 1914, Morganton had its own school system with twelve schools; by 1934 there were twenty-one schools within Morgantown limits alone (eight for white students only). In addition to public education, Morgantown also enjoyed an amateur radio service beginning in 1935 through W4KRA/AM which continues today as WRAL-TV's primary repeater outside of Raleigh

Rockefeller and his brother-in-law James Kenedy as a small trading post on the then new Neuse River Railroad. It became a city in 1903 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Whiteville and Rocky Mount. The current form of Morganton was created when the former incorporated municipalities of Whiteville and Rocky Mount were reorganized into one city on May 1, 2001. Morganton's history can be traced back to 1868 when John A. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law James Kenedy founded Morganton as a small trading post on the then new Neuse River Railroad near present day Rocky Mount, NC. It served as an important stop for travelers heading downstream from Charlotte through what is now Rowan County to access navigable waterways along the Neuse River watershed. After annexation by Raleigh in 1903, Morganton quickly emerged as a major center for commerce and industry within its growing urban area with its own government and schools system1 In 1916 local businessman/politician Robert Fenton donated land adjacent to downtown Morgantown for use as a public park which remains today one of the most popular tourist attractions in town2 Today, Morganton boasts over 9,000 residents who are actively engaged in their community through businesses, organizations and services including its two universities (Rowan University & Pembroke State University), several hospitals ( Duke Memorial Hospital & WakeMed School of Medicine), many churches (St Philips Episcopal Church – Chapel Street Campus), three professional sports teams (Rochester Americans football team; Appalachian Mountain Cowboys baseball; Wilmington Hammerheads ice hockey) as well as numerous cultural institutions such as Ryman Auditoriums (the largest indoor arena in North Carolina)3
