Mooresville is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 918 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1851 by George Moore and his family. It is named for General John C. Frémont, who had been its namesake since the Battle of Bull Run in 1861. The community of Mooresville was platted on November 3, 1851 by George Moore and his family. It became a part of Gaston County on February 14, 1852. The first post office opened in Mooresville on December 12, 1852. When the county was acquired by Vance County on March 1, 1907, Mooresville became Vance County's only incorporated municipality. In 1909–10 the Vance-Lander Railway extended from Gastonia to Mooresville through the town; this railroad remains in use today as part of CSX's Gulf Coast Line system. The first school in Mooresville was built on what is now Main Street; it opened in September 1830 under the name Young Academy; it closed about 1865 due to financial problems brought about by increased freight rates caused by railroads developing along the route between Asheville and Charlotte (then called State Road 20). A new school building was built on Church Street around 1870 which served as both schools until 1902 when a new high school replaced it (later renamed Davidson High School). A two-story brick courthouse sat west of present day Court Avenue until 1905 when it burned down (it has been rebuilt several times). Beginning with World War II there were an increasing number of military bases open within commuting distance including Camp Stewart Air Force Base east of town and Naval Base Chapel Hill just south of town; these installations changed little during peacetime but generated an increase in civilian traffic that created various problems that led to annexation requests from other municipalities bordering Vance County during wartime periods such as postwar years 1945 through 1949 despite objections from then Mayor Jock Hardwick who felt that troops would not live close enough tocivilian families without resulting negative effects such as overpopulation or crime wave.; however annexation requests were denied because Vance County did not have legal authority to annex municipalities beyond its borders without prior approval from the state government.?

Moresville was founded by John Moore in 1795. The town was named for General James Moore, who fought in the Revolutionary War. The Moore family had a large farm there until around 1800 when they moved to Carney. In 1827, General Andrew Johnson's forces came to Mooresville and attacked the town, burning down many of its homes and businesses. One resident, Major John Randolph, refused to take his men into battle and barricaded himself inside his home. When the soldiers refused to leave him alone he shot them all dead. This event is generally considered one of the most infamous moments in North Carolina history.
On July 24, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Mooresville. The town was named for General James Moores, who led the southern delegation that made the Declaration.
