A post office was established here in 1806, and the name of the town changed to Moorestown in 1881. In 1898, a local gunsmith, James Bigham, built the first modern pistol shop in Mooresville. He also developed an early rifle design that became known as the “Bigham Rifle”. In 1902, he opened his own firearm store and began manufacturing handguns under the name ofMoore-Bigham Arms Company. In 1911, J. Crouch & Sons Firearms Manufacturing Company was founded here with a factory for making shotguns and rifles under two different names: Crutchfield Arsenal and Cunningham Armory. It continued to be headquartered here until it closed its doors in 1955 due to financial difficulties. Mooresville is a small town in North Carolina, located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The town was founded in 1786 by Colonel John Moore and his family. In 1867, Mooresville became a municipality. The area that now includes Mooresville was first settled by English colonists in 1675. After their defeat at Yorktown, General James Monck's British army retreated to Roanoke Island and abandoned all hope of returning home before they were forced to surrender and be shipped back to England as prisoners of war. In 1786, Captain George Rogers moved from Virginia to lead an expedition against French forces near present-day Roanoke Island. When Rogers returned to America he brought with him valuable information about French military installations on Roanoke Island so that American forces could victoryantly attack them without providing themselves with much strategic intelligence about what their opponents were up to. The Battle of Mount Royal occurred when American forces attacked a French position on Roanoke Island during this expedition; while American victory is often celebrated as one of the greatest successes ever achieved against European enemies, it actually cost Rogers his life because he fell too close to a cannon fire which may have killed him if not for timely intervention by fellow Americans who saved him. Captain Rogers' achievement has been commemorated annually since then with an event known as "Rogers Day." Upon his death in 1795, Major General Nathanael Greene appointed Lieutenant Governor Robert Ford as captain general for North Carolina and ordered Ford to erect a large redoubt called Fort Johnson along the south bank of the Yadkin River opposite where Captain Rogers had earlier located Fort Caroline (now known as Confederate Memorial Park). This fortification served as part of Greene's defensive line against possible British attacks from within South Carolina until after its abandonment following Revolutionary successes at Saratoga Springs and White Plains Creek Bridgehead respectively in 1799-1800 under George Washington’s command during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief United States Army.. In 1775, the British burned down the old courthouse in Mooresville. It was replaced by a new courthouse in 1824. The present courthouse was built in 1915.
