The Moore’s were early gunsmiths and quickly became known for their quality firearms. Their rifles, pistols, shotguns, and cannons all enjoyed high popularity during the Revolutionary War years. With increased warfare came an increase in military demand for firearms. Consequently, manufacturers sprang up all over the country to meet this need. In Mooresville, one such manufacturer was Samuel Colt Sr., who started manufacturing revolvers there in 1836. This industry-splitting inventor is credited with developing the modern revolver. The post-Civil War era brought about a new era of firearm production in Mooresville when federal agencies began purchasing large numbers of handguns to use during law enforcement duties. This led to a continued boom in handgun manufacturing throughout the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. Mooresville is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The first permanent settler in what would become Mooresville was James Moore in 1828. In 1869, A.J.Millsite donated land to form the present-day town of Mooresville; this was followed by a referendum to incorporate as a municipality on December 8, 1870. The vote resulted in incorporation and an overall population increase from 3,827 at the time of its incorporation to 10,463 by 1930. During World War II, Mooresville became one of thirteen towns within NATO's Allied Command Europe (acoastal command). On December 15th 1945 it was officially renamed USS "Mooresville" after General George Custer - 4th Infantry Division Commander during World War II - who had died earlier that year from injuries sustained while fighting against Japanese forces near Imabari Island off Japan's coast during Operation Downfall . Mooresville is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Mooresville was James Witherspoon, who arrived on horseback from Virginia on July 12, 1784. He named his new land "Witherspoon's Valley" in honor of General James Witherspoon who had helped lead the British forces against the American Revolution. In 1814, a group of pioneers led by Andrew Johnson set out from Mooresville to found a new county in Vance County and name it after themselves – Moore's Valley. They traveled for many miles through forests and fields before reaching their destination near present-day Fairview Cemetery. On November 10, 1814 they laid their foundation stone for what would become known asFairview Presbyterian Church and School Building – becoming one of the earliest Protestant churches in Vance County. When Vance Countywas created in 1815 it included much of what is now eastern Durham County and much of western Wake County; however, only about 3/4ths of present day Mooresville was within that original county boundary. In 1838 an act was passed by the state legislature which divided Vance County into two parts – Moore's Valley became part of Wake County while portions of Durham and Gaston Counties (which includes modern Raleigh) were annexed by Johnston City (now Durham). This change effectively ended all references to Mooresville as being within either Wake or Durham Counties although some early residents did still refer to themselves as "Mooresvillians." As time went on there were sporadic efforts to reestablish contact with Mooresville residents; however these failed until 1906 when Reverend J C Robertson organized a church group called The First Parish Church which started touring geographic areas throughout North Carolina looking for people who could connect with their ancestors from back home. From this beginning more than 50 descendants living in Mooresville have participated actively in church functions both inside and outside the town itself over the years! Moresville was founded in 1751 by Captain John Moores and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for Colonel James Moore, a British officer who had served during the American Revolution. The first settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and other vegetables. In 1815, the Moore family sold their land to the State of North Carolina. Mooresville became part of Durham County in 1821. In 1834, the county was divided into two parts – one including Mooresville and the other including Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill became an independent city in 1870.
