Mooresville, located in the heart of the Pender County region in North Carolina, is a small town that has seen a lot of change over the years. The population was only 1,936 when it was annexed by Raleigh in 1867, but it had grown to 3,000 by 1900. Mooresville enjoyed a growth period during World War II as many Allied soldiers settled here and businesses grew due to wartime demand for goods and services. However, steady economic decline followed the war and Mooresville lost its status as an important community by the late 1990s. Today, Mooresville is one of several towns in Pender County that have experienced significant population losses during recent decades. The first inhabitants of what is now Mooresville were Native Americans who lived on the Incline River valley area before European settlement began. The earliest known reference to this area occurred in 1772 when Captain John Smith discovered land hereabouts while exploring the lower Great Lakes region. By 1801, Indian traders had established trading posts along both sides of the river and there are Evidence Site Mounds (E1) at milepost 9 east of present-day Moorstown Roadmarker on State Route 372 south of downtown Mooresville which date back to 3000 BC! agriculture was begun near milepost 2 which indicates early use of permanent Fields or pastures as well as hoes and sickles! A store built within 100 yards of E1 also yielded evidence seal impressions dating from c 1400 AD! The first white settler arrived in what is now Moorstown Township according to records from 1802! James Tatum purchased 640 acres west of present day Moorstown Roadmarker from local Cherokee Indians for $200 on July 5th 1802! This purchase set off a chain reaction that would result in other settlers arriving throughout Upper Pender County including those at mileposts 1-3 northeast of today’s downtown Mooresvilleville!! In 1830 Jameson & Witherspoon opened up what is now called “Mr. Figgins Store” just east side current day Main Street which served local farmers until 1865 when they moved across I-95!!! These pioneers were responsible for paving way for future development including construction of infant schools (1835), brick wall factory (1860), NCBT electric Utilities Plant (1925), Post Office building (1927/28) – all partaking greatly in boosting business prosperity through their hard work and efforts Moorstown School District was formed on April 25th 1912 with 10 students teaching grades K-8 with Mrs Hays serving as Superintendent !! With state troops quartered nearby barracks increased production needs meant more than 20 new teachers reached our school district during 1912-1914 !! Over 50% Of Teachers Who Left Our District Played In Local Schools After They Returned Home !!!!!! It wasn’t until after passage Of Public School Law No 95 93rd General Assembly On March 15th 1923 That Our district finally became A “School District” !!!!! In 1828, the town of Mooresville was founded by John D. Moores and his wife, Susannah. The town grew rapidly and in 1830, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, the Mooresvilles erected a log courthouse which served as their primary government center until the erection of a more modern building in 1858. In 1840, they built a larger brick courthouse which still stands today. The town also erected several churches including the Baptist Church in 1844 and the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1865. In 1870, Mooresville became an incorporated city with a population of over 350 people. By 1907, its population had decreased to around 100 people due to increased competition from nearby towns such as Charlotte and Raleigh. However, by 1925, its population had recovered somewhat to around 300 people. In 1937-38,Mooresville hosted the North Carolina State Fair which attracted many visiting dignitaries such as President Franklin D Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill
