Mooresville is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Outer Banks of the Atlantic Coast. The population was 5,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of Wake County. The community was named for George Moore, a settler who had arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The town began to develop in the early 1800s as a result of its location on an important shipping route between Wilmington and Raleigh-Durham. In 1822, Moore's son-in-law built the first post office in Mooresville; it operated until 1828. In 1892, Mooresville became part of merged Wake County with other rural areas east of Raleigh into one county under the name "North Carolina." In 1907, when North Carolina legalized alcohol, Mooresville liquor store owner Daniel Jansen set up his business again and started selling beer and wine exclusively tooters over 21 years old; this prohibition led to his eventual trial and conviction for violating provisions of that state's law governing liquor sales to those under 21 years old (he lost). In 1954, Mooresville obtained city status from Wake County; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 1984, when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown Raleigh by traveling through eastern Wake County instead,Mooresville became one of several communities along I-95 that were served by local truck stops serving both food and gasoline products inland from downtown Raleigh (Morningside Drive being another such stop). These stops closed around 1990 as a result of competition from larger stores located within walking distance from I-95 Avian Heights Mall which opened in 1987 adjacent to I-95 exit 218 near Garner Mills Mall).

Mooresville is a town in Pope County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1792. It is named for James Moore, a Loyalist officer who helped resist British occupation of the area during the American Revolution. Mooresville is located on the east side of Pope County and extends into Rutherford County to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mooresville were French traders in 1792. They came looking for land that had been claimed by General Henderson as part of his purchase from Spain of Florida following the Seven Years' War. Henderson's force had arrived at Cape Fear River on November 5, 1792, and discovered a large tract of land lying between Catawba County to the north and Randolph County to the south. They called it "New Bern," after Governor John Stanley's headquarters on New Bern Island in what is now Wilmington, Delaware. In 1793 James Moore moved from Scotland to Fincastle Township (now Kingsland) on Yadkin River in present-day Raleigh with his family and started farming products such as tobacco and wheat which he shipped back home across the river to sell to local planters. A year later he erected a log cabin near where he still stands today as an early example of frontier architecture typical of Scots-Irish farmers living along both sides of this long river valley then still filled with open country swampy bottomlands covered with tall cedar trees; virgin pine forests lay just beyond those slopesTo these pioneer farmers I owe my earliest acquaintance with this beautiful place known today simply as Mooresville."
