The town was founded in 1825 by Colonel James Fayette Moore and his wife, Martha Fayette Moore. It is now part of Charlotte County, NC. Most people here rely on agriculture for their income and many families farm land that they use to produce hay, oats, vegetables, pumpkins, apples, potatoes or other crops.

Mooresville is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1814 by settlers from Maryland and Virginia who were looking for land to homestead. The first post office was established in 1815. In 1865, Mooresville became the county seat of Durham County after it was moved from Chapel Hill. The name "Moor" comes from a family of pioneers who named their farm "Moor's Mills." The post office changed its name to Mooresville in 1868 because of the popularity of that new community among farmers and others near Raleigh. In 1870, Richard Nixon built the first textile mill in what is now Mooresville on present-day Moor's Creek Road. Later that year, John Leland bought the mill and developed it into a large cotton textile factory which employed thousands of people until its closure in 1984. Today, there are few remaining reminders of those early days – but history buffs can explore portions of the factory complex on private property as well as some public gardens dotting Moor’s Creek Road between I-40 exit 191 and US 301 exit 188A (I-40/301 Connector). There are also two other extant cotton mills located about one mile east along I-40: JB Mill & Cotton gin (1898) on Old Hickory Boulevard just north of Chastain Road; and PCM Mill & Cotton Gin (1901) on Hermitage Avenue just south of I-40exit 191A (I- 40/301 Connector). A third extant cotton mill located about one mile west along I-40: Fayette Mill (1904) on State Highway 52 just west of Exits 192A and 192B has not been documented since it closed down around 1960 or 1970 due to fire damage only! And finally another defunct cotton mill located about three miles west along I-40: Hartsfield Mills (cotton gin facility) which closed down around 1935 due to lackadaisical maintenance! But even these local history attractions pale beside some more famous sites associated with Mooresville during its heyday such as Research Triangle Park – home to many major research institutions including Duke University, Brown University and Wake Forest University – or simply noted landmarks like IBM’s world headquarters campus adjacent Interstate 40 Exit 190A known variously as “IBM Place” or simply “The Factory”! Today much evidence remains regarding what went on here back then when smoke curtained off factories laden with Finished Goods Loaded onto Rail Cars destined for ports all over America… INCLUDING PORT OF NEW ORLEANS!!! Which begs the question; What kinda place was this when everything changed with World War II? Maybe our ancestors never really left…. After all….. they only had themselves to blame!
The first permanent settlers in Mooresville were James and Martha Searcy, who arrived in 1781. The town was founded on a tract of land granted to them by Governor Tryon. The town was named after the Searcy family, who had fled an Indian attack the year before. The first store built in Mooresville was called the Family Store and it operated from 1783-1787. In 1814, a mill was built in Mooresville by John Hargrave and it continued to operate until 1862. A post office was established at Mooresville in 1811, and remained in operation until 1865. In 1871, two stores were burned down in Mooresville while they were being robbed; this caused much indignation among the people of the town because no one could explain why such destruction occurred. A public meeting was held to discuss what could be done to prevent future robberies, and it resulted in the erection of a public building which still stands today known as the Hargrave House. A school was built on College Street near Railroad Avenue around 1892; it continues to be used today as part of UNC-Mooresville’s education system. In 1907, a water main line was constructed through Mooresville and drinking water became available for everyone within radius; this made life much easier for residents since they no longer had to go outside to get water or carry buckets back home. In 1957, NC State University opened its doors with eight students attending class on campus; today NC State University is one of America's leading universities with over 100 undergraduate programs and nearly 50 graduate programs across many different faculties
