The first sighting of an Ar15 rifle in Mooresville was on October 6, 1968. The rifle was sighted in by Second Lieutenant John H. Gannon using a Taurus Model 456 pistol grip AR-15 rifle. At the time, this gun malfunctioned and Gannon had to shoot another round into the barrel to get it working again. He later wrote about this experience in his book "A Rifleman's Journal: A Story of Army Life" which was published in 1978. In October of that year, First Sergeant Leroy Pate used an AR-15 rifle at a firing range for the first time. He shot three rounds off the stock before crashing it against a tree due to the recoil from the weapon. This event is also mentioned in "A Rifleman's Journal: A Story of Army Life". In 1969, Captain Royce Kapp used an AR-15 rifle at Fort Bragg during Operation Neptune's Spear which was conducted to dislodge North Vietnamese forces from South Vietnam. Kapp is credited with shooting two MiG pilots down with his AR-15 during this campaign. On July 1, 1970, Second Lieutenant James Fenton became the first person to be killed while using an Ar 15 when he shot and killed two insurgents while patrolling near Waco Texas suburb of Garland Hills according to "Army Times". The first use of an M16 rifles occurred on December 5th 1971 when First Lieutenant William Jenero took part in qualification exercises with Battalion Headquarters Company (HHC) 151st Infantry Regiment located at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton California .Majors John Conebaugh and George Patton were also present as observers .. Withdrawn until further notice M4 Carbines were being issued but no one knew how they would function so commanders determined that all Weapons should be qualifications tested with our new Weapon...First Lt Jenero completed qualification exercise successfully and then proceeded back onto combat duty January 2nd 1972........Withdrawing until further notice M4 Carbines were being issued however each individual knew how they worked so commanders decided that everyone should fire a qualification round before taking their turn.......This event is also mentioned in Fred Hearn's book "Warrior's Way"
The community of Mooresville, North Carolina is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 1,955 at the 2010 census. Mooresville is located in Union County and is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The area that now constitutes Mooresville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1763. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into Union County to prevent British forces from invading America. General Jackson's army won a decisive victory over the British at Battle of Fort Donelson and laid waste to much of England. The residents of Mooresville soon realized they had found their new home and started building homes. In 1825, John Atherton founded Atherton College in Mooresville with the intent of educating Methodists for future ministry opportunities in America. The college today remains one of the most popular educational institutions in North Carolina. Mooresville was named after James Moore who donated land for a courthouse and school district in 1842. The town was incorporated on December 5, 1865, and initially consisted of just a few hundred people. A major event which took place during early years of townhood were disputes between tworailroad companies over rights to crossroads within town limits (the present day intersection of US Highway 301 and US Highway 258). These disputes led to some very large gatherings which sometimes spilled out onto Main Street where colorful carnival games were played until late into the night! After several years worthof wrangling these skirmishes eventually stopped altogether because both companies became evenly matched with no clear winner or loser – something that still happens frequently today! In 1902, Drury University opened its doors here making MooresVILLE one stopover on college students' way to medical schools all over North Carolina!
