A post office called Monroe opened in 1889, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. It wasn't until 1911 that William Hargrave (a previous owner of Monroe's courthouse) donated land to become what is now known as the Deanwood Campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Located on present-day Orangeburg Boulevard east of I-85, this land became one of the largest collegiate campuses in America during its early years with over 1,000 students from more than 60 countries studying at various universities including Duke University and Harvard University during World War II under General Dwight D Eisenhower's command! In 1961–1962 there were also construction projects associated with then-new US Route 401 which ran through Monroe from Durham to Orangeburg providing increased economic opportunity for residents nearby while supporting infrastructure development throughout much rural NC!
