The Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club has been shooting at least since the early 1800s. The club was founded in 1875, and the first rifle match was held in that year. In 1902, the club became a society, and it participated in national matches from then on. The club also developed its own firearms safety program which has been continued to this day. In 1923, the Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club made history when they became one of the first clubs to adopt iron sights onto their rifles. This change allowed for more accurate firing at distances beyond 100 yards. From then on, the Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club had become an international force in rifle shooting. Today, there are over 350 members of the Monroe Rifle and Pistol Club who participate in various rifle matches around the United States and Europe. These team events allow for exposures to many different types of weather conditions which can impact shot placement and accuracy; however, these shooters continue to maintain high standards both inside and outside of competition venues.

The county courthouse stood on what is now First Street in Monroe until 1906. In 1853, following an act of the General Assembly entitled "An Act to establish a Sheriff and Justice Courts within this State", Monroeville Township was established north of present-day downtown Monroe and east of US Highway 421 between US Highway 460 and US Highway 411 (now I-85). That township had its own court system until it merged with neighboring Monroeville in 1907 to form what is now Harnett County Court System #1. According to the 2000 Census, there were 4,493 people living in Monroetown Borough which included portions of downtown Monroe and all east side streets including Main Street forming parts of borough boundaries for over 100 years before annexation into Downtown Park Borough effective July 1st 2013

The postwar period saw heavy growth in manufacturing and commercial success for both local businesses and out-of-state investors such as Coca Cola Company and International Telephone & Telegraph Company (ITT). This prosperity led to social unrest among minority populations—particularly African Americans—and eventually to protests against discrimination throughout most of American society during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1970–71, a series of racially motivated riots swept through downtown Monroe during what is now known as "the summer offensive." After many dead or injured police officers responded with pepper spray or tear gas against peaceful demonstrators, Governor Walter Mondale called for rioters to be brought «to heel» with jail time if caught stretchered off city streets without proper permits or documentation from their families. The following year saw another series of protests against discriminatory practices by local business owners; this time they were led by Revd Jesse Jackson Jr., who used his platform on national television to call for higher taxes on businesses that profited from segregationism and other forms of racism.
