Monroe is a small town in North Carolina that has been around for over 350 years. The population was 9,573 at the 2010 census, making it the second smallest town in the state. The area now known as Monroe was part of Cherokee Nation until 1724 when it became part of Roanoke Colony under English rule. On February 14, 1814, Ulysses S. Grant landed on what is now the Machin Peninsula near present-day Monroe and named it for President James K. Polk—the first Ulysses S. Grantlands in America! In 1821 Congress approved a sale from Cherokee Nation to Andrew Jackson as part of his efforts to bankrupt organized Indian nations during the Seminole Wars (1812-1826). It wasn't until 1827 that General John Buford's Department moved into what became present day Monroe after defeating Mobile Bayou Indians at Battle of Buxton Plains (July 11, 1827). A post office called "Monroe" was established here on October 12, 1830 by JNO Benjamin Fenton with one letter mailed from Raleigh to other parts of North Carolina every week! In 1861 Confederate Genl Robert Ewell Glover ordered all white males between the ages of 16 and 50 living within 2 miles (3 km) east or west of Durham must leave their homes and march south to Andersonville prison where they would be worked off their sentence! This forced many people living in isolated rural areas such as those aroundpresent day Monroeville – including those who lived at "Moccasin Swamp" – out onto roadsides for hours on end while guards watched! The few people who managed to make it back home had very little food or water left inside their homes! Because most residents chose not to fight during the Civil War (many did not have military experience), much infrastructure was destroyed or lost during this time period including churches, schools, businesses and farms which hard hit local citizens treasury coffers; instead many individuals donated goods or services such as painting ambulances for $5 each or helping build a bridge over Guilford River using materials collected from local farmers’ fields! Many residents also took up arms against slavery which resulted in several skirmishes along Greene County lines but no significant losses suffered by either side until 1865 when General William Tecumseh Sherman invaded South Carolina Killer's Creek Valley… resulting in more than 50 killed & wounded on both sides!!!!! After driving Union troops away from its namesake community following a series Of major strategic deployments across Rutherford County followed by an epic siege & assault culminating with three days total combat operations dubbed “MODEST REEFING”; Northern forces arrived safe & sound at Camp Douglas outside present day Monroe!!! Way back then these were some pretty tough times………… featured: pineapples being used as ammunition (& still are today) cannons that shot lead balls up into sky 100 yds long& lotsa history associated w/ this place
