In Monroe, North Carolina, there is a history of handguns and gun slings. The first guns in the area were pistols. There were only two or three handguns in town at the time. The pistols were used for hunting and target shooting. The guns that did exist were not very good. They would not shot far and they had low accuracy. In 1892, a man named John Latham bought a rifle from an old gentleman in Monroe and started to shoot at targets with it. He found that he could hit them much better than with his pistols. He began to sell his rifles to other people in town. From then on, handgun ownership became more common in Monroe than rifle ownership. People started to use their handguns for protection as well as for target shooting and hunting purposes. For many years, handguns were the only firearms that people could own in Monroe. However, over time, people began to purchase rifles as well so that they could hunt larger game such as deer or bear outside of town limits (Hutchinson et al., 2008). This change was brought about by the need for more accurate weaponry when larger game was being hunted outside of town limits (Hutchinson et al., 2008). In Monroe, North Carolina on October 14, 1800 John Brown and his followers set out to shoot at a group of British soldiers. Brown was shot in the shoulder and died soon afterwards. The battle ended with only three British casualties.
Monroe is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP covers an area of 9 square miles (21 km2). The first permanent European settlers in what would become Monroe were two families from Transylvania arriving in 1784. In 1820, Henderson County was organized, and Monroe became its initial town. Monroe's early years were marked by a number of challenges: it was located on an ancient Indian trail crossing three forks of the Yadkin River; it had to be defended during Reconstruction against numerous raids by Ku Klux Klan members; and it experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century as cotton plantations replaced pastoral farming activity throughout much of southern North Carolina. In 1887, the legislature created new townships within Henderson County and assigned Monroe to one of them – Ashley Township. During this time period, Ashley Township rapidly transitioned from agricultural to industrial territory as tobacco production increased local demand for cigarettes and other smoking products while also attracting heavy investment from large tobacco companies such as Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., RJR Nabisco Inc., and Phillip Morris USA Incorporated. By 1920, Monroeville had become one of the most important economic hubs in southeastern North Carolina due to its location along Interstate 85/Upper Cumberland Highway and its status as a major transportation hub for goods moving through Virginia and Tennessee across particularly Nantahala National Forest land before rejoining NC state atexit 12 near Fayetteville Today's Monroe is home to many businesses that have arisen over time including AmocoPhillips Chemical Co., Phillips 66 Pipe Line International LP, Piedmont Coal Mine LLC, NATHANUSA Corporation - formerly Appalachian Electric Cooperative Company - and Coastal Living Center which opened in 2006 on behalf of Intermountain Broadcasting Service LLC..

In 1871, Monroe became part of Charlotte; but in 1875, it reverted back to its original name as part of a process known as “ bilingualism” in order to promote cultural diversity among North Carolina towns. After Reconstruction ended, Monroe saw some growth due to new industries such as logging and manufacturing. The population reached 100 residents by 1907, but declined thereafter because of migration away from the area due to changing economic conditions and competition from other towns in North Carolina. However, with increasing development around Monroe came a rise in crime rates which led to community activism that helped reduce these rates over time. In recent years, efforts have been made to rehabilitate local businesses and create jobs for locals through revitalization projects like this one.
Monroe was founded in 1785 by General James Monckton and his wife, Elizabeth. The town is named for the then-new state of North Carolina. It grew quickly, becoming a major center for trade and industry. In 1820, Monroe became the capital of North Carolina.
