Monroe, North Carolina is home to the world's largest powder magazine and one of the most important rifle ammunition Manufacturing districts in the United States. The town was founded by General John C. Marshall in 1849 as a trading post on Catawba River. It became an important manufacturing center for arms and munitions during the Civil War because of its location at the junction of two major Military routes. In 1865, Monroe was renamed Fort Monroe after President Abraham Lincoln's order to rename all Federal arsenal posts in South Carolina after Confederate Generals who had fought against Union forces during the war. The fort served as a military base until it was destroyed by Confederate fires in 1898. Today, Fort Monroe is a federal Recreational Site open to the public. The first shot heard in America was fired by George Washington at Mount Vernon on July 4, 1775, when he used six rounds of musketry to repelattack by French forces led by Pierre-Jacques de Montresor. One round from his cannon killed five ofMontresor's horses and wounded several others before they could escape across the river into British territory; this event marks what is now known as Independence Day in America. During World War I (1914-18), artillery pieces were mounted on either side of battlefelds northwest of Paris for fear that artilleryfire might ignite forests or other combustible objects near battlefields and make them targets for enemy fire. To prevent these accidents, engineers developed an armored platform called "The Sherman" which could be towed behind an armored truck into position over German positions so that guns could be unloaded without coming into contact with friendly troops or equipment. This system greatly increased firepower available to Allied armies during World War I while also preventing any loss of life due to accidental artillery fire explosions
