Mint Hill is a city in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carteret County. The Nickname for Mint Hill is "The Hill". The first settler in what later became Mint Hill was John Butters who arrived in 1736 and named it "Butterfly Lane" after his Butterfly Farm near where he resided. In 1853, US Senator James Buchanan's wife lived there and he visited her frequently. He decided to move the White House from Washington D.C., which then occupied much of northeast North Carolina because of its vicinity to Charlotte and also because mint production could be done closer to home than in Philadelphia or Baltimore. After leaving office, Mrs. Buchanan moved back to Mint Hill and continued living there until her death in 1902. Minthill's early days were difficult as both tobacco farmers and merchants had their own interests in preventing the town from becoming successful due to competition from more established towns on the crossroads of what would become North Carolina and Virginia respectively. However, by 1861, when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following the American Civil War, many people within Minthill turned against secessionism and supported Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant - this included some who had been among butchers' gangs that looted Confederate Supply Centers while they fought elsewhere on the battlefields of Virginia In 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all African Americans brought before him for questioning about whether they had aided or abetted Rebel forces during the war-time occupation of South Carolina (the so-called “Bloody Sunday”), most residents within Minthill chose not to answer questions about their participation in or support for slavery or secessionism given that doing so could have resulted in execution or worse: one man even offered his services as a cook/butcher for $10 per day if any black soldiers were captured alive by Union forces during fighting around Charleston – an offer that was refused out of hand When Reconstruction began following Reconstruction Act of 1877 (signed by Abraham Lincoln), many businesses closed down due to increased taxation laws put into place as a result of ended reconstruction efforts; however, with help from local entrepreneur Harry Dent (known locally as "Drinkin' Harry"), several small businesses reopened including two grocery stores soon followed by two hardware stores before 1990 when Dent relocated his business off Center Street into new buildings which still stand today It wasn't until 1990 when Drinker's Business Improvement District Incorporated purchased old downtown buildings between State Street & Main Street beginning construction on what would become known as MINT HILL MARKET - now home to over 50 independent businesses including restaurants/bars/cafés/conveniences store etc...mint hill has never looked back since!

The name "Mint Hill" is derived from the English word "mint," meaning "place where money is made." The first settlers arrived in 1785 and named their community after Mount Mint, in present-day Scotland. By 1807, most of what is now Gaston County had been settled by whites. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Mint Hill while marching south to battle at Pea Ridge. From then until 1865, Mint Hill remained an important military post because it lay between two major Confederate retreats: Antietam and Fredericksburg. The town became primarily agricultural; Most of its residents were farmers who raised crops such as corn, cotton, soybeans, haystack oats and peas. In 1946–47 when new Interstate 95 was being built through Gaston County and much of the surrounding area (including Mint Hill), part of the cost was met by a federal government grant known as the Highway Development Program which funded various projects in rural areas including construction of roadsides parks and road improvements throughout North Carolina. One such project was a new alignment for US 1 which crossed over Little James River nearpresent-day Mint Hill just east of I-95's exit 15A (exit number 259). This project also included constructing a bridge to carry US 1 over the river which today forms part of SR 925 (SR 925 Bridge Road). In recent years many businesses have either closed or relocated due to competition from larger locales such as Charlotte or Asheville but some remain in operation like Subway sandwich shop which opened in 1984 and continues to operate unchanged despite several expansions over time A significant event that took place within mint hill occurred on October 6th 1913 when 100% literacy rates were achieved for all school children under 10 years old thanks to efforts by Mrs Henderson founding club called “The First 100% Club” however this club only lasted 3 years before disbanding due lack interest
