Mint Hill is a small town located inwestern North Carolina. The population was 2,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of Buncombe County. The name Mint Hill comes from two places: one is on the river's edge and the other is near a mint. The first reference to mints came about in 1493 when English explorer John Lawson found some plants which he called "mint" because of their ability to produce a narcotic effect. In 1635, Colonel Nathaniel Bacon founded what would become known as Mint Hill Plantation on land that now includes much of Mint Hill. The plantation grew until it included over 120 acres (49 hectares). At its peak, the plantation employed more than 1,000 people including 100 slaves and 20 overseers. After Bacon's death in 1718, his son Tryon took over the property and made it into a sheep and cattle station with 80 acres (30 hectares) of land for each animal owner plus 10 acres (4 hectares) per family member for milk cows and 10 acres (4 hectares) per family member for pigs/sheep production. Tryon also built a log gaol which still stands today and named it after himself - Tryon Hall or Tower Jail.
