It is part of Buncombe County and has a total area of 21 square miles. The climate in Mint Hill is temperate with mild winters and hot summers. The first people to settle in what is now Mint Hill were Native Americans who had evidence that there was an ancient settlement here. In 1795, when surveyors took possession of the land that makes up present-day Mint Hill, they found only earthworks and no ruins as far as they could tell. Archaeologists have since discovered four prehistoric villages in or around this location—Hickory Ridge, Flemington Terrace, Millstream Colony, and Spanish Fort—that date back to 10500 BC! These villages may have been abandoned because of natural disasters such as floods or war; however, it’s clear that these people knew how to cultivate crops and build homes. The arrival of Europeans (British colonists) did not go well for the natives. By 1802, most of the native leaders had either died from disease or been taken captive by the English. Early on in American history, relations between European settlers and Native Americans were often difficult; but by 1810 things were starting to improve with royal warrant #1 being issued which allowed for peaceful trade between British colonies and their Indian allies without bloodshed. Many natives became indentured servants during this time period because there was no other way for them to get ahead economically quickly after coming overland from their home country (Canada). In 1814-1815 General Thomas Johnston led a force against Creek Indians near where present day Highway 20 crosses NC RR 403 today (the battle known as Cowpens). Aftermath left many dead on both sides including more than 100 Creeks! After Reconstruction ended in south Carolina following slavery’s collapse, many African Americans migrated northward through what is now Mint Hill into white neighborhoods across North Carolina during the late 19th century; however, they never completely assimilated into mainstream society and continue to maintain some cultural reminders from their African heritage such as nicknames like “Nigger Head” or “Disco Negro” which are still used today within certain circles around townspeople (Healy 2004). In 1899, Hargrave Park—later known as Elmwood—was dedicated adjacent to Main Street in memory of General John Custer and others lost during The Great Sioux War (1898-99). It became known as "Mint Hill" again after World War II because Allied forces had destroyed all German military installations along the east coast including Stonington Island off Wilmington Harbor so that nothing could be used as target practice for artillery training purposes (Healy 2004). In 1955–56 mintHill received its own post office which remained operational until 1975 when mail delivery moved out-of-town onto Interstate 95 instead forcing closure of mintHill's main postal facility (Healy 2004).
