Mint Hill is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Mint Hill Cemetery and the North Carolina State Archives and History Museum. Mint Hill was first settled in 1795 by James Caldwell, a Scotsman who had come to America as a indentured servant. He built his house on what is now Main Street, and named it Caldwellsville after himself and his family. In 1814, General Daniel Boone moved from Kentucky to become its first white settler. He brought with him some of his followers and began construction on what would become known as Boone's Mill Creek Farmhouse. This site is now occupied by the state archives building. In 1827, when Durham County was established, Mint Hill became part of it. The townspeople erected their own courthouse in 1836-37, but it caught fire soon after completion and was destroyed. However, the sheriff’s office survived until 1909 when it also burned down. The only other structure standing in mint hill at that time was a private residence owned by Mrs John Witherspoon which still stands today (it has been replaced several times over the years). In 1907-08, George Catlett purchased land east of Mint Hill from Jno Pemberton for $1 million dollars ($100 million today). Catlett renamed his property "Mint Hill" after his old stomping ground in Scotland where he had been born in 1793. At this time there were only about 100 people living in mint hill proper while adjacent communities such as Gastonia were growing rapidly due to new development within easy driving distance of both townships – primarily because gold had started flowing out of California during the late 1800s into eastern North Carolina! Today there are nearly 4500 residents living within one mile (6 kilometers) of Mint Hill proper with even more spread out throughout surrounding areas including Gastonia/Beaumont/Cabarrus/Durham Counties! MintHill has always played an important role in our community; starting with James Caldwell's founding days when he named his settlement Caldwellsville after himself and all those around him The many businesses that have sprung up aroundminthill over the years include: banks & loans (mostly since 1923), grocery stores & retailers (most notably First National Bank), law offices (including one founded by Catlett himself), two churches - one Baptist and one Methodist - both active fulltime parishioners with ongoing services (& high school classes), two golf courses - one municipal course used predominately for weekend golf tournaments hosted by various civic organizations & businesses associated with them all (& pro shop) as well as hundreds of individual residences completed since 1907 alone! Some notable residents or visitors who have resided or visited mint hill over these years include Presidents Ronald Reagan (/veepstakes1980/, Richard Mitterrand (/rmtaylor1983/)) Gerald Ford (/graham9777/, Franklin D Roosevelt (/FDR42maintenance]), Jimmy Carter (/jimmycarter1981/) Bill Clinton (/billclinton1993/) etc... TODAY'S MARKETBOUNDARY rattling off dozens if not hundreds of businesses that operate just outside mint hills limits makes interacting with this unique place much easier than ever before!!!
Mint Hill is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham metropolitan area. The first settler in Mint Hill was Levi Coffin. He and his wife Esther settled on a farm near what is now Elmwood Cemetery on January 15, 1792. The first school was held in a log cabin which burned down in 1804. A new cabin was built in 1807, and the name changed to Mint Hill after Sir Walter Raleigh's settlement of Roanoke Island (now Richmond) about two miles away (Mint Hill being about four miles from Raleigh). In 1811 George Withers donated land for a Methodist Church and School within the town limits. In 1824 Nathaniel Macon established an Academy for Boys nearby at present day Carrboro Village Park. Mint Hill had a post office from 1830 until it closed in 1865 due to lack of mail service from Wilmington, NC. The first settler to be elected Mayor of Mint Hill was James Caldwell with over 60% of the vote in 1840-41; he served one term only before losing reelection to Amos Kendall by just seven votes! In 1850 Isaac Hardee platted what is now Maplewood and organized as a town under steamboat landing privileges granted by Governor Tryon during Reconstruction era; however this effort failed when many people did not want to move away from their homesickness caused by living so close to New York City during that time period In 1865 Newton Hite reopened the post office as part of more general reopening efforts throughout Durham County following Reconstruction period; however again this effort failed when many people chose instead to stay within their homesickness-ridden communities where they could still see friends or family frequently In 1886 local physician Dr John Matson opened up his own practice adjacent to Pennyhill Baptist Church which became one of downtown Raleigh's most popular tourist attractions until it closed around 1990 due to increasing pollution issues associated with surrounding factories As development pressures increased throughout much of North Carolina during late 19th century & early 20th century Mint Hill declined economically while other towns such as Chapel Hills/Chapel Point(in Wake County) & Cary (in Durham County) flourished economy-wise Some aspects contributing may have been increased agricultural production available nearer unto highways resulting from early promotion by businesses seeking access thereto thanks largely also à la ' drive-ins' fashionable then & today such as Rheem Manufacturing Company located just east off I-85 exit #4 approximately 10 minutes north on US 401 South),& newcomer Mill Creek Resort becoming an major suburban bedroom community resultant; although marketing materials issued circa 1925 showed large trees growing along both sides of main road leading into center village--apparently indicativeOf "old timer" nostalgia factor? However those days are long gone now since old mill creek has been converted quite extensively into highrise apartment buildings constructed following manner characteristicof contemporary Charlotte / Raleigh areas etc., parading some characteristically Period styled Victorian architecture typical thereof); although once upon a time there resided something uniquely lovely called "Mrs Brown's House" situated atop highest point visible downhill toward center village opposite churchyard--a real find if ever existed! An interesting footnote concerning Mrs Brown's House: According to some sources its current use appearsToBeAsAHomeschoolingCenterForChildrenOFNorthCarolina sortsa like proverbial 'tombstone' remaining amidst all these grandiose apartment buildings full Of ZIP codes etc.--which would make her whereabouts quite revealing indeed =-)
