It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1792 by colonists from Rhode Island who settled in what is now Alamance County. In 1810, President James Kenedy issued a proclamation creating the mint for coins to be used in Confederate States of America transactions during the American Civil War. The town's first post office was established in 1811 and continued until it closed in 1903. The present mint building was built between 1886 and 1888 as a Works Progress Administration project to help promote economic development in Alamance County while also honoring General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Mint Hill has several historical landmarks including: Mint Hill has also been home to two professional football teams; Greenville (1915) and Charlotte Hornets (2002).
