Mint Hill is a town located in Onslow County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mint Hill was founded in 1798 by Levi Coffin and other investors from Petersburg, Virginia. The town grew quickly due to its natural resources and became a small regional center for agriculture and trade. In 1871, Mint Hill incorporated as a city under the name of Charlotte; it lost its charter in 1972. Despite this setbacks, Mint Hill has since become an important community in Onslow County and continues to grow economically. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Onslow County were French colonists who arrived during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. They named their new land "Mint Hill" after Mount Royal (the highest mountain peak near Philadelphia), which they saw as a symbol of power and success. After several years of exploration, these pioneers discovered little valuable land within miles of where they lived but did find some productive wells and springs that provided water for their farmsteads and village buildings—a key factor in early development of this area. By 1809 mostofOnslowcountyhadbeenoccupiedby indentured servants brought over from Africa by Captain John Smith's expedition under General James Wilkinson as part of his attempt to open up interior North America to white settlement via supply lines from England through Canada- thereby creating what would become known as the American Revolution era (1775-1800). These white settler groups also formed gangs that terrorized native Native Americans living on the frontier; such activities helped contribute significantly to tension between European colonists and Native Americans that led eventually to open warfare (known variously as Pontiac's Rebellion, Shawnee War or Great Lakes War). In 1798 Levi Coffin had traveled down South Carolina's Eastern Shore looking for sites for new settlements when he ran into difficulties finding enough fertile ground suitable for farming with his own two hundred slaves present on his plantation at Petersburg Citadel . He met Captain John Smith who recommended him find land elsewhere but agreed soon afterwards to invest $10 000 with others forming what would later be called the original mint hill colony including his son Gideon Coffin In 1800 many Loyalists fled Charleston during King George I's war with France leaving behind much wealth looted by British forces throughout West Florida including property values throughout southeastern North Carolina especially along Catawba River valley .
