Mint Hill is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Mint Hill was founded by Scotsmen in 1735. The Scotsmen were looking for a place to build their new country and found that there were no good sites for farming in central North Carolina. So they settled down on some high ground near where the present day Mint Hill sits and built a fort to protect their property from American Indians. Mint Hill became a thriving community when English traders began to visit central North Carolina in the early 1800s. In 1825, John Randolph, an American politician who had come to NC as a surveyor, discoveredmint mills in what is now Mint Hill and decided to make it his headquarters. He named the mill "Randolph's Mills." In 1827, James Hammond purchased Randolph's Mills from John Randolph and started production of mint cigarettes which he called "Hammond's Cigarettes." By 1830, Hammond had moved his operations to larger mills on Catawba River and began manufacturing cigars as well. The mint cigarettes became very popular among smokers throughout America and eventually led to the development of cigar smoking as an fashionable habit across all social classes in America during this time period

Mint Hill is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Mint Hill was Captain John Lawson in 1718. He named it after his home on street called "Mint". He also noted that there were trees growing there which resembled those found near Philadelphia, PA. This initial encounter with the land led to further exploration by Europeans and development of this area by early settlers including Richard Henderson who plattedmint hill in 1799. At that time, the only way to get to Mint Hill from southcentral Cabarrus County was via a wagon road known as Henderson's Trace which ran east-west for about 10 miles (16 km). The town eventually formed around this trading post and developed into a small community with many residences and businesses located along Henderson's Trace Road. As more people migrated into the area, they built new homes and businesses along Morehead Street and other streets near present-day Mint Hill Elementary School and Post Office Square. In 1881, the original post office building became an annex of what is now UNC Chapel Hill’s Main Campus Library after it was moved from its original location on Morehead Street across University Avenue from UNC Chapel Hill’s then-student union building (nowitteve Commons). In 1912, two brothers - James Fenton and Willis Applewhite - opened a grocery store in what is now known as Post Office Square just northeast of present day Mint Hill Elementary School; their store would remain open until 1955 when it closed due to competition from larger local stores. In 1928, Duke Energy Company constructed an electric power plant on grounds adjacent to Post Office Square – which remained operational until 1984 when it closed due to environmental concerns associated with pollutants produced by the plant. During World War II, Mint Hill served as one of six towns within military zone 5A located within radius of Raleigh Durham & Charlotte; all residents were required to contribute $3 per week towards food rations for troops living inside those boundaries After World War II ended hostilities ceased across much of central North Carolina & most areas surrounding Raleigh/Durham center; mint hill slowly regained some level of prosperity through various entrepreneurial efforts such as reopening Ofcie Square Grocery Store operated by Mrs Selma Waddell (& her husband Roy), becoming one of several successful small business ventures during that time period NCI established research hospital at Mt Hood Research Park in nearby Asheboro in 1967 following merger between NCI & NIAHS After numerous expansions over ensuing decades including annexation by Springdale Township in 1990svoters passed referendum authorizing annexation back unofficial status effective December 1st 1991voters reinstated referendum authorization effective January 1st 1992 defined boundary changes resulting from establishment Additionally annexed additional unincorporated communities include Eagletown(opened 1974), Rocky Mount(opened 1978) & Harnett(opened 1994) during later years while still remaining under jurisdiction of Cabarrus County government
