Mint Hill is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Area. Mint Hill is one of two towns in Rutherford County that are named for mints (the other being Hickory). The first mint in North Carolina was located in what is now Mint Hill and operated from 1786 to 1814. Mint Hill was laid out by James Robertson in 1784 and named after his home on Cherry Creek which he had purchased from Governor Tryon. The original store and Post Office were built on the current site of First Baptist Church in 1811. In 1827, General Robert Ewell visited Mint Hill while campaigning against Lawrence Johnston and ordered all stores closed until Johnston was captured. All but one of the stores reopened when Johnston was released without charge. Mint Hill experienced a financial crisis during the early 19th century due to an influx of European immigrants who did not have money to buy goods with or invest in local businesses. This led to several fires that destroyed many homes and storefronts within the community over a period of years beginning around 1800. By 1830, most business ventures had failed and some residents moved away as new opportunities opened up throughout much of rural America than did farming or manufacturing back then. The population increased rapidly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War because freed slaves began arriving here as workers to rebuild their lives after being emancipated from slavery
Mint Hill is a small town in North Carolina, located on the banks of the Dan River. The name was given to the hill by Nicholas Minturn, who built a mill there in 1792. The town was originally called "Duncanton" after the Delaware River where it met the Dan River. In 1839, it became part of Henderson County and in 1889, it became part of Rutherford County.
