Mint Hill is a town located in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is named after the mint that once stood there. It was founded by General Andrew Johnson in 1828 as a trading post on the now-defunct Granville Island. The post served as a base of operations for his expedition against Seminole Indians in 1836 and also functioned as a military garrison during the American Civil War. The first gun hammer found in America was likely made here in Mint Hill. This metal implement has been used to hammel nails since before recorded history. A hammer with an iron head and wooden handle dating back to about 1700 BC was discovered in Turkey. In 1614, English colonists from Jamestown found two Indian guns on what is today Castleberry Island off of Wilmington, NC. Mint Hill is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area and is part of the larger Raleigh-Durham Combined Statistical Area. Mint Hill was founded by Scotsmen in 1785 as a small trading post on the Holston River. In 1814, it became a full town and remained so until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Chapel Hill to form the current city of Durham. In 1828, James Gadsden built his manor on what is now known as Gadsden Street in Mint Hill. He became one of North Carolina's most influential citizens and served as Governor from 1830 to 1835 and as U.S. Senator from 1841 to 1845. Gadsden also helped found Duke University in 1886 and played an important role in its early history. The other significant figure associated with Mint Hill during its early years was Alfred Hines who built Hines Dairy near present day Elmwood Avenue and King Street in 1865 after moving from his original home near Hillsborough County Courthouse where he had been living since 1800 (Hines later moved to Charlotte). Hines was responsible for developing much of rural Gaston County into what it is today including many industry jobs that have provided stability for the area since World War II; he also donated land for UNC Chapel Hill's first football stadium which opened in 1927 (the only college stadium ever built without help from private donors). MintHill residents are primarily farmers who raise cows, pigs, chickens, horses, corn dogs and turkeys along with grains such as wheat and rye for their own needs or sale to others within their community or elsewhere within Gaston County.. Mint Hill is a small mountain town in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 1,468 at the 2010 census. Mint Hill is located on the eastern border of Buncombe County and includes the communities of Blanding and Morehead City. Mint Hill is named for Nicholas-Jacques mint, a French trader who first visited what is now Buncombe County in 1765. After visiting many places in North Carolina before his journey to Georgia in 1766, he arrived at what is now Mint Hill on November 11, 1765. He named it after his new discovery in America – "Mint hill" (now known as Mount Mitchell). This location became an important center for trade with other parts of the colonies because of its strategic position between Asheville and Raleigh. The town's economy changed during Reconstruction when large numbers of African Americans moved here from southern states after being freed by Union forces. The first white settler in Mint Hill was John Thornton who arrived around 1815. He built a log cabin on the northeast side of Mount Mitchell and started trading with other settlers nearby. By 1830, Thornton had built two more cabin buildings near where he currently resides. Other early residents include James Hargrave who bought land from Thornton in 1827 and Henry Stone who purchased land adjacent to Thornton’s property from him about 1829-30. In 1840, David Mowery settled down along US Highway 421 near present day Morehead City and began growing cotton plantations there for export to Europe markets In 1865, MintHill became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America following the American Civil War After Reconstruction ended, many African Americans were re-freed from slavery and moved into MintHill . Many businesses opened up here such as Gassaway’s grocery store which remained open until 1971 before being closed due to financial problems . Additionally, several churches were built here including First Baptist Church which remains active today In recent years there has been some growth back onto Mt Mitchell with development taking place along both sides of US Highway 421 east of town – making it an attractive destination for tourists Today Mint Hill remains a small community consisting mainly of black people living among themselves within close proximity to one another albeit with some progress made since late 20th century when civil rights movement forced change throughout area
